Its gone from 10,000kms to 5,000kms to 3,000kms in recent years.

I do changes when the oil is brown and loosing its goldness regardless, even if its less than 5,000kms. I figured, relatively, dirty oil is good. The fact that crud is being removed from the engine is a good indication that the oils doing its job, it also means the oil should be changed more regularly until the engine is clean enough for regular interval changes (5000kms as per toyota service guidelines).

About the smoking, try some thicker oil and change your pcv.
