You might be surprised at how much time this will get you. I was told for the mini at Wakefield, new tyres are worth 4 seconds a lap, and my first time on old tyres at Wakefield was 1:19. The fastest historic Minis the week before were running 1:15-1:16. I think there was probably a talent gap there too (i.e. I had the least talent).
I know that you can't really compare the Mini to the Soarer, nor Wakefield to Mallala exactly, but in terms of the best bang for buck time wise, new tyres have got to be it.
