I had this problem after getting my EMV back from repairs. Pressing the volume button, it wouldn't beep at all. Turning the volume up or down made no difference.

I pulled out the EMV and disconnected everything.

Plugged it all back up and miraculously, had volume again.

I cannot explain it.
