Never thought about it but that's a reasonable question...

there's lots of cosmetic options which talk about longer UV lasting etc, but i wonder if there's something less cosmetic and more practical to keeping the rubber alive..

I just googled a bit to not much useful info but stuff like:
http://www.ngt-recycledrubber.com/rubber_renew_rejuvenator.html

seems more reasonable rather than the more cosmetic stuff. Of course using the wrong product may just decrease the life of your rubber.
