I always thought it was the piston moving up/down. Normally, in a fully charged unit, there's very little pressure differential across the piston but when the nitrogen has decayed I'm not so sure. Also, Dave, in your first diagram, I think they have the piston and cylinder indications pointing to the wrong places.
