Swapping to coil-plus-strut suspension is very common, and was one of the first things I did, as my car also had a defective airbag strut.
While it's a pity to down-spec a UZZ31, the positives are that you should be able to pick up a good set of struts & springs for under half the price of ONE new strut, the changeover is easy and straightforward (remember to pull the pump fuses and disconnect the suspension controller), and the result is a slightly less comfortable but better handling car.
I used a UZZ30 suspension in mine. Don't forget you must make sure you get the top mounts, as these are integrated in the air struts and cannot be removed. Supra struts and springs will also work, I believe.
If you find TEMS equipped struts, the TEMS system cannot be easily be deployed on the UZZ31, as this car uses a totally different TEMS system to coil sprung cars - you could still use the TEMS struts though.
I believe that new UZZ30 struts may still be available from Castle Hill Toyota - I remember a post about this not long ago.
If you get a really cheap set of clapped out UZZ30 units, it might be worth spending a bit over $400-$500 on a new set of struts for them before the install.
Regarding your battery - Soarers do tend to drain the battery if left parked for a long time. Possibly disconnect the boot light, as it can stay on, plus if you have an alarm, it might be worth looking up a fix to stop current leaking back through the alarm. This amounts to, from memory, adding a diode to a relay box in the drivers footwell, and is cheap and easy, once you get the box out!
