Trevor, you more than likely learned a 'whole language' approach to reading and spelling. For decades that method was abandoned in favour of a phonetic method - anyone who remembers their primary school teachers coaxing them to "sound it out" when attempting to read or spell a word was subjected to this educational atrocity. It's patronising to the kids and a complete waste of time. Phonetics is the method by which we learn speech, NOT the conventions of the written word.
Luckily there are some bright sparks down at the department of education who cottoned on to the fact that this method was a load of honkey, and they're trying to stamp it out. The problem is that it will take a long time to achieve...
