If you have a bit of tappet noise is it essential to get on top of it as soon as? Also is it a bit of a mission best left to the experts and do they need to do the lot or can they identify the bad one(s) and save on labour. Anyone any ideas on costs?

You don't have tappets, you have shims. To check the shim clearance, remove the cam covers and use a feeler gauge between the cam base circle, and the top of the shim. This needs to be done with all 32 shims.
Personally, I'd leave it. If my cam covers come off, its to install custom cams.
