ive had the front of my box cutout for a while now, there was a small increase in power. Made a top cover etc.

What im wondering is that behind the filter there is another large plastic shroud.

I think its to do with sound coming back and deadening it. Has anyone removed this as well?

Its only a very small entrance into the inlet piping, i thought maybe by removing it it would open it up even more.

Hmmm take a picture, I can picture what your referring to.

The TT box my have different part again compared to the basic V8 one.

this is the part i am refering to here

I think it would be like a sound deadener, but it would also act as quite a large restriction i would think

Ah yes, I see it.

My guess it would have been a trick by the Japanese engineers to quieten the turbo sounds which come from the intake.

Can you remove that piece?

Yeah I would get rid of it, looks to be a sound suppressing device.

well i ripped it out.

Bugger me is it alot louder when in boost, you can hear it really sucking.

Also changed the note of my BOV quite substantially.

Dunno if i lost power or made it lol, its a really hot day so its not the best day to test. But it does sound alot meaner, may have to loosen the BOV a bit though, sounds like theres the slightest hint of compressor surge goin on.

Hehe, well that confirms it was to reduce all that noise :-)

Great DIY mods.

Since I changed to a pod filter I have noticed more air noises. Especially flutter/cough when coming off boost fast. Also get some 'sucking noise' but no where near what I get with the pod on my ute, a turbo diesel. What does compressor surge sound like?

depending on what turbo you are running, it may sounds like this,
(theres no hard evidence that compression surge causes damage)
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=298ubnyu69Q&NR=1

or this (mine sounds like this on 15psi)

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=V2TThg2FBOA&feature=related

or this
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=TGMCWy7Czxs (mine on low boost)

Hope that helps

Thanks for the links, I spose I could've searched youtube for that but didn't think it would be there so well demonstrated. I'll have to do some recording with someone else on the throttle and see if its similar. Once I get a box around the pod I probably won't notice it so much anyway.

I'm still confused at to exactly what piece was removed... I'm sure after a quick look at mine I'll notice something...

the part within the box, that funnels into the actual intake is what i removed, with it removed it allows the air to be pulled through the whole airfilter with much less restriction.

Instead of that little circle there, its not all open

its removable with a dremel lol, u gotto cut it out.

Careful where its shallow, i managed to cut a small slice out of the actual box lol, nothing a bit of araldite and some nicely cut black plastic cant fix.

You will get a substantial increase in induction noise, it will change the noise of your BOV and you will get slightly more power.

Not bad for 10 minutes of cutting, cleaning and making 100% certain theres no plastic shavings in there that will make its way into the turbo impellers lol
