Hello - how are you all,

Good ??

This topic has been covered several times.
I am posting for a different reason.

Basics:
V8 Soarer - 92 model - 150 000 on the clock.

The cat warning light has been flashing on and off for the last three months.
Checked the power steering pump - no leak there.
The warning light tended to come on once the cats were hot after driving for an hour or so.
Kept driving anyway, with no dramas.

So, recently replaced the cats with brand new, 2 1/2 inch stainless steel cats.
The driving difference was noticeable straight away - for the better !!

The cats aren't the hassle.
So, what's the problem ?

Ok - here goes :
Paid for cats, turn on engine in the car park - the warning light is still there. Hmmm....

Ask exhaust guy if he made sure the sensors were in place.
He said "of course the sensors are connected, and everything is sealed properly - don't ask me, I don't specialise in engine management problems..."

What I would like to ask you all is:

Why is this light still showing up ?
Is this potentially a problem ?
What are your ideas re fixing this ?
Plan to take the car down to the local Toyota dealership to run diagnostics next week.

Yeah, I left myself wide open by paying first (yeah, yeah!), but they were a well known workshop, alright blokes and replacing a cat is not brain surgery.
Didn't even think about it until I saw that dreaded light come back on.

Your advice in this matter will be appreciated.
Love my V8, and plan to keep it for some time.

Cheers.

Hi Damian,

Firstly .

The Cat symbol on your dash is the check engine light and may mean something more than check the cats. It is a positive sign that new cats have made a difference. If you look on the main page, there is a topic for diagnostics. This covers how to do engine diagnostics on your car - yes, you can do it yourself, with a paperclip.

Once you've got a diagnosis, you might try searching this sight for a remedy if you feel like fixing it yourself. Or you could take it to your Toyota dealer. Let us know what the fault is, and I'm sure someone here (probably not me!) would be able to point you in the right direction.

Anyways, good luck with it.
