YOu could always install a 3076r with a 0.6 rear housing if you really wanted response and a reliable 270rwkw ... Powerband would be really nice . Then if you wantedj to step it up some , swap out the rear housing for a 0.8 and that will step you up to 300rwkw on 24psi .

Being manual you can use any type of ecu , EMS or Power FC if you wanted plug and play . The WOLF and Haltech are also available in plug and play now so it really depends on budget .

Personally i would invest into single setup before tuneability .

Which brings me full circle back to the 3076r which is where I was heading 6 months ago

As I have stated elsewhere this is the turbo setup GCG recommended for me, then 3082 and possibly the 35r in that order.

We have been smashed by bills recently so I am waiting for the new arms to arrive before I venture back ou on the track again.

Only reason im saying turbo 1st , IF/When the stockies let go , and you have spent money on an ECU , then you gotta find the coin again for the turbo conversion .

ONce you have done the conversion , you can happily then select which ecu to go with and tune it then .

i ran the 3076r for a while with just safc2 and under boost cut... went sooo much harder than standard twins but had an awesome spool up which is what you want for a track car. response/power/torque. i had the .63 rear (now on scott wilkes car) and basically hit boost the same time as the twins but pulled heaps harder to redline. i would strongly recommend this over a 35r as though you may not have as much power you would have more drivability coming out of corners etc. eith er that or a 35 with a .63 rear.

Aaron, it was you, Scott, and a few others who got me thinking about the 3076r, and this was backed up by GCG who I sent all the info about the car to for advice. Then there was a strong push towards a Tial v band GT35r.

Since looking at the Mallala track I have decided a strong top end is not as important as it was in Darwin. This combined with a sudden desire to buy Ikeya Formula Control arms has slowed me down a bit. I also haven't been able to get hold of Lew to purchase his second hand fibreglass bonnet and guards, so unless something pops up, it looks like I'll be buying those new as well.

I may get around to buying a new turbo, or I might just wait until a good second hand package comes up for sale.

to put the response of the 3076R into revs.

I have 14psi by 3000rpm in 4th and 5th pulling from 2000rpm :-) The thing is stupidly responsive and pulls extremely hard to my 7600 limit, should pull a bit harder up top when i install the brian crower 264 cams i have sitting in my room this weekend :-)

Scott (and others), how would you compare the GT3076r response to stock CT12's with Aftermarket Dumps? Response going from a standstill, and also response while putting the foot down during cruising?

I'm not sure never got around to installing dumps before I went single but driving one with an exhaust and fmic I would say the stock ct12's may get the initial jump if you are running Alot of boost would keep up with the single but when the single is on boost it hauls so much harder. Big single though is lag lag wheelspin!

Just rego'd the red car in SA- Fcuk me $810 for the privilege of driving on the worst roads I've seen in a 'capital' city.

Darwin roads were much, much better.

Another cash hit, meaning more time to think about the engine upgrades.

Yeah Paul, I'm just not convinced I'll be happy with high flowed twins for the outlay. I assume that price is for each turbo, like CGC etc. So that'd make it nearly $4000 for the full monty.

I think they re a realistic option for a street car where appearance is important, but there is no upgradability going down that path. I mean If I go single, and want a bigger tubo, it is a reasonably small spend to swap housings, swap turbos etc as opposed to spending thousands on high flow twins, and then having to spend thousands later on to go single.

On the up side, I guess you'd save on manifolds and piping, external wastegates etc.

In other news the first Time attack event is this sunday. The car is still on blocks, and I never even entered. Where does the time go? I am going to go out and have a look and make some enquiries etc.

I am also being formally 'inducted' into the SCCSA tomorrow in the city. Aparently the club house is pretty impressive.

Not for me, Scott.

Nengun sent me an email. It seems my adjustable arms are now in the mail. So, not as bad as some of the 'horror stories' I have heard since placing my order.

I went to the SCCSA meeting tonight and discovered their(our?) automotive library. I borrowed a book called How to Make Your Car Handle, by Fred Puhn. I am sure I have heard about it before. It is an old book, printed in the US in 1976, but the general points of suspension setup can't have changed that much.

Yep it is a good book, but there are also some newer ones that add a bit more practical stuff. Long winters in NL made me get alot of books to read. Let me know if you want the titles/authors.

got an email back today from munro racing turbochargers. They do a rebuild including overhauled and high flowed with turbine wheels, enlarged wastegate valve etc for $1250 the pair. That is a pretty good price. Almost worth doing until I decide what turbo to buy.

Bloody good price, Andrew is looking at them for his supra that's how I found out about them :-) ..

If only they could rebuild my FD's turbos for the same price :-(

In the supra link posted earlier the power outputs were quiet suprising. 397 rwhp out of an out supra with the highflows however that was @ 22psi

Went out to Mallala for the time attack today. There were some very quick cars out there, and some not so quick cars. Results are here:
http://www.orion-timing.com/results.htm

Looking at the regs I would have to enter 'open 2WD'. In that class some of the fast cars were lapping 1:18, and late 1:20. I guess I need to pick my game up.

I came home and looked at my poor overworked front tyres and figured they had pretty much turned out their last good times. They are down to the wear indicators and have been on the car for the best part of 2 years. The local motorsports tyre guy wants me to put Federal FZ201s on the front. I am not so sure. They require less camber than R888s to work effectively due to a stiffer sidewall, but I have just gone and paid for adjustable arms which will make the R888 work better any rate. I need to see what the price difference is, as my preference is to stick with R888s.

Hey Ben found this on the eBay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270544081316&viewitem=

Thought I would help in your turbo dilemma the other choice of course is to go a custom dual stage twin turbo kit and set it up so one turbo works your low rpm and the other does high rpm with this setup you get boost thru the entire rev range so the car boosts from say 1500 rpm to 4000 rpm and turbo 2 boosts from 3800 to 7000 rpm not quite sure on the particulars on the how as I'm still looking into this setup for my car but it makes alot of difference to the performance of the car.

Carl, Cheers mate. I would not consider the custom twin turbo route, especially for a circuit car. Too complex, too heavy, too much that could go wrong. A lot of the guys that have this type of system stock(JZA80, Series 6/7/8 RX-7 etc) tend to ditch it as soon as the start to modify.

A variation was the twin charger system, having a small supercharger for torque off idle, and a turbo for higher up in the rev range.

In the kit on US ebay there seems to be a lot of stuff for $400. You can't even buy a decent turbo or intercooler for that here. I'd have to wonder how long it would last.

I have emailed Brian at Munro Racing Turbo again to see what he thinks about converting the stockies to highflow with a ball bearing conversion as well. It might not be worth the cost or effort, but then again maybe it would.

I would have to consider it an interim solution before stepping up to a big single.

Look what was waiting for me at home tonight!

My new adjustable upper control arms. Gee, I hope they turn out to be worth the investment.

I got another email from Glenn at Munroe racing turbo. He can convert the CT12A to ball bearing, but has not done one at this stage. As such, he isn't sure how much they would improve them. I would imagine they might regain some of the spool up time you might lose going to a larger (highflow) and heavier (steel) wheel.

Put a v8 in, yawn. Everywhere you look there is a Chev LSwhatever stuck in the engine bay of something it shouldn't. Frankly, it wouldn't be my Soarer if I did that. You should know, Andrew, that variety is what it is all about. Your category is interesting because of this variety, but for a while there every engine bay had a chev in it. It was borderline a one make series with different body shells (silhouette racing???)

JOKES.

I think everyone can see through my thin veneer and realise I am too tight to go throwing money away. It took me two years to buy a method of adjusting front camber, for God's sake. Of course I am going to agonise over something as costly as turbos.

Just to put everyone at ease, I am looking to pick up a set of cheap stock turbos from Brisbane and get them highflowed. This may fall over though as the seller has not replied to my posts or PM, despite my offer to pay his asking price . I get some sort of perverse pleasure from running the stock equipment under the bonnet. People simply refuse to believe my lap times with a 'stock' soarer (most consider your car 'stock' unless there is a huge Turbo and shiny anodised fuel pressure regulators, fuel rails, and massive external gates poking out everywhere. They disregard all the work done in the wheel arches)

In other news I am entered in the G1 Drift Supercup Time Attack event at Mallala on 10 April. After watching the Time Attack event last Sunday I reckon I can run without embarrassing myself (in my Stock Soarer, LOL).

If you had some money you should get some t3g's look stock but capable of 270rwkw. Try porting the turbo housings and manifolds like Jeff bedsores he gained a fair bit of power doing that to his but you would want to be careful you don't go too far and weaken them as being a track car will have alot more heat for prolonged periods compared to a drag run but benefits were definitely there to have.

In other news I am entered in the G1 Drift Supercup Time Attack event at Mallala on 10 April. After watching the Time Attack event last Sunday I reckon I can run without embarrassing myself (in my Stock Soarer, LOL).

I will be good to watch. I will be there supporting team Soarer

Cheers mate. Come and say hello.

I'll be in the shed all arvo/weekend fitting the new UCAs. I also got hold of some new sway bar links (can be made to measure from a nolathane generic kit). I have cut them at 100mm and with proper ball joints they should allow me to actually run the bars at 'stiff'. The old links (whiteline figure of eight things) were only 75mm and could not line up with the stiffer settings.

Also chasing a local distributer for Toyo R888 to buy some new front tyres.

Probably too many changes at once and will not be tested and perfected by the Time Attack, but I cant see it being a step backwards.

I'll put some pics up tonight.

Oh yeah, spent a bit more of the 'turbo money'. Oops.

Those whiteline figure 8 things are disappointing - less stiff than the stock style ones. There's a few on eBay Racing Corp. That are OEM style and size in reasonable quality however - I'm running them on my car.

If you've already got the nolathane ones, then you're probably set.

G'day Bernard,

I have been told repeatedly they are crap. My main concern with them was I couldn't get them into the stiffer holes. I bought the Selby bars in a group buy, and they threw in the links as part of the deal.

I looked at those, but figured out they would not work with my adjustable bars. I needed the front links to rotate through 90 degrees due to the way the bar is made.

Here are some pics of the new linkages I made and the Ikeya arms installed. The old UCAs were bloody hard to get out.

Ben, the arms look great and the new sway bar links should do the job.

Also there are more turbos here since the other guy wont reply (these suit rebuilding)

Cheers Paul, I was just thinking that seeing this other bloke seemed keen to get rid of them by the weekend, had a good price on them, and lived in the same city as the rebuilder maybe it was providence stepping in and helping me through my indecision.

This second bloke in your link has fked turbos in WA for a higher price. I don't like the idea of shelling out good money for stuff that is already broken. Chances are they might not be good for reconditioning.

Hopefully this first bloke will log on soon. You never know, he might be on a bender, laid up in bed, working some monster shifts etc.

Well,

I have to say I am disappointed with the Ikeya arms. I was a bit worried when I laid them down side by side last night as they seemed to be the same length when the Ikeya was adjusted to it's shortest length. My suspicions were confirmed when I went to do an alignment this morning. I am able to get another half a degree of adjustment from these highly regarded arms. So I have 2.5deg neg camber on the passenger side, and 2 degree neg on the drivers side.

I am now committed to improving this, by hook or by crook. I am going to do what an old racer recommended a year or so ago. I am going to widen the slot the eccentric bushes slide in to by a millimeter or so on the outboard side to see if I can gain some adjustment. I plan to start on the drivers side with the aim of at least getting the adjustment equal at 2.5 degrees.

Should this fail to satisfy me, I am going to do the same to the Ikeya arms and try to gain another millimetre or so of adjustment.

Wish me luck. To the Dremel, Batman!

Maybe we can request thru admin that all forsale ad's must have a contact number, anyways knowing you you will sort out something to gain more neg camber however it is disapointing to see that the Ikeya arms gain very little.

I took 2mm out of the outboard side of the Lower Control Arm slot. This allows the eccentric bush to be rotated closer to horizontal (the point where it will move no further outwards and begin to move inwards). I decided no to go to far as I am thinking that if you go to horizontal, then you lose some of the mechanical force from the cam action of the bolt. I could be wrong, and the whole assembly is secured only by the bolt tension. Any rate I can now get 3 degrees neg camber on the drivers side. I will look at the passenger side arm and take 1mm out to take it to 3 degrees as well.

I think I might set the factory settings to their full extent and then use the Ikeya arms to work back from there. The Ikeya arms are an easier point to make adjustments track side as you don't need to get under the car and swing big spanners. Take the wheel off and with one 12mm ringy you can make easily measurable adjustments repeatable on each side.

I know what you mean Paul. I was expecting another 2-3 degrees out of those bad boys and was gutted to find I got another half a degree. I would recommend against them if you want more neg camber. They look like they would give lots of positive camber. Might be good for cars that are excessively lowered and have picked up heaps of camber as a result.

I would reckon the original eccentric (offset) bushes I was chasing from MVP, Daizen, Titan Motorsports in the US would have given more usable adjustment.

Disappointing Ben :-(

I have a feeling this is why on one of the Yahoo.jp auctions for these they said they need to be used in conjunction with the Ikeya LCAs (or vice versa, cant remember now).... obviously they could just be saying that to get people to spend more but it would seem now that the LCAs are longer and thus give you more camber even if the UCAs are the same length as stock

G'day Phil. Yeah I was sorta crushed. It is by far my most expensive white elephant mod to date.

I would recommend you simply take a dremel or die grinder to the LCA mount itself if you are looking for more camber. I was conservative and took 2.5-3mm from the drivers side and 1.5 mm from the passenger side to give me a total of 3 degrees neg on both sides. I have always had half a degree variation between max camber on both sides. When I measured the slots for the eccentric bush I discovered they were slightly out, hence why I removed different amounts of material each side. They are even now.

Degree of difficulty would be 5 out of 10 (1 being changing a tyre and ten being 100000km service/replace turbos/replace rear wheel bearing). The sanding drums that come with the Dremel are spot on the right size to clean up the slots after you have removed some material with other fittings.

I spent some time looking at air flow under the wheel arches yesterday. I am wondering if a vent in the top of the guard behind the centre line of the wheel would help. Something louvred like you see on GT cars for example. I got my car hot (oil temp 100 deg) and switched on the cooling fan just above the weel is where you can feel the hot air coming out. Of course there would be a wheel spinning madly in there so the test is not that simple, but seeing as it looks like I am only going to do time attack events I can pretty much do as I please with regards to rules.

The other option is a large vent behind the wheel arch in the lower part of the guard (under the crease line). There is a structural component behind there about 80mm inboard you could but the vent up to for strength.

PS it took just under 5 minutes at idle to pull the temps from 100 down into the high 80s with the fan alone.
