Well I went at the old carpet with a vengeance this weekend. Come Saturday morning and I was thinking I just cant let go of the carpet without doing anything when the nice leather is going in soon for everything else.

So I got myself a single can of the VHT vinyl and carpet (charcoal) dye to try out. My trial spot was an area under the transmission console. First impressions: gosh this stuff is gooooooooood. Very thin, dries quick and very amateur spray painter friendly. Just spray on, brush, then spray in opposite direction, brush again. The thing comes in a spray can as well, as I do not have any compressor/ spray paint equipment etc, made my life a lot easier.

I did a thorough prep by vacumming and then cleaning the whole carpet with Kitten Interior Foam Cleaner- this did a wonderful job- 2 hours of prep time. Waited about 45 mins to dry then went at it with the VHT. First coat took me about a couple of hours. Left it overnight and did the second coat today- took 3 hours as I was being very fussy with the final quality. All up needed 5 cans of the stuff. At $15 a can from Repco, its not much. I also painted the carpet trim surrounds etc.

I was over the moon with the results. I know that some of the high scuff areas like the area next to the foot rest would show signs of fade in a year or so. I reckon I am better off still with the brand new looking carpet and having to do 10 min patch ups once every year than having the aged looking carpet.

Here are the pics. Cheers guys.

Problem is that it does tend to wear off over time. So you will need to re-apply the dye..

Yeah mate, its well worth the effort. As for the wearing over time, quick patchups once a year would most probably fix it up, as long as we can get the cans.

I find that it doesn't fade that much if done properly. Its been 2 years since i've done mine and its only faded a bit. I just need a new can because i want to replace a panel.

Looks good! Something I will have to get around to eventually.

Do you have to pull out all the trim to get out the carpet or is it something you could get out just by removing the seats?

Probably worth taking out the centre console, Luke.

Not too difficult to do really, just several screws! ;)

Does anyone know where to just get new carpet? Or does it have to be fabricated??

Luke: As Callum said, its not too difficult to take the centre console out. However you can do it without- just gotta do a thorough taping around- which might turn out to be more labourius.

Dave: New carpets available at ebay for around $200. I doubt that the mouldings would look as nice as the OEM carpet -->crappy fit. But thats my opinion.

Are you planning to do anything with your seats? Or do you like that 2 tone look?
