Hey,
Who has had a go at stripping back that milky lacquer and refinishing it in a different colour stain and clearing it?

What did you use to remove the old stuff? paint stripper?

Not sure but it's pretty thin. If you are going to sand, take it easy!

i sanded mine pretty well. used varying grades of sandpaper, around 1500grit with water. just did it by hand and wet it down every now and then to see how i was going. took about 5 minutes a piece. I didnt get a very good finish on repainting though. i was advised to take it to a paint shop and get it done in two pack which might have been a good idea.

Yeah james. That's nice man, looks so much better. Did you use a stripper or just sand it down?

This is SUCH a bad idea hahah. I started doing mine when i did my big interior job and it took FRICKIN AGES !!

Sand... polish... sand.... sand.... sand.... polish....sand....polish...polish...... sand.....

GET angry, take to painters and get painted Piano Black. Happy again.

I would never do that job again

It's a polyurethane finish, I believe. It's not that hard to sand, just take it easy, especially on corners, as there are paler backing layers of wood underneath.

Considering how few cars have real Birdseye Maple (as opposed to imitation plastic crap) I consider it a sacrilege to paint over real wood made it's rumoured by Yamaha, but each to their own. IMO if you want plastic trim, buy the pov pack plastic trims and paint them.

I have a set of plastic trim that I'm happy to sell. Have been sanding it back for the purpose of priming and then painting. Interestingly the dash piece is finished in a much different costing than the four door pieces, and the plastic underneath is a different colour.

I had a spare set of plastic trim from our first Soarer (I put real wood trim in it) but the removalists lost it during our move from Norfolk!

Yeah I actually bought some spare woodgrain to restain and it's seeming like a massive job to get them rubbed back. Already stuffed up 1 piece too.

James, did you just use wet and dry to sand them or what?

Mike, That's what i was thinking too, buy plastic trims to paint and keep the wood.

Not sure which way to go now...

the fresh clear you paint on seals it all in!

Hey James your new timber looks awesome! I have just recently brought myself some woodgrain and sanded it write back and polished it up. It came up a hell of a lot better then how it originally looked but i think i want a darker shade! do you remember what exact stain you used? really like that! oh and what clean coat did you use?
