Drill 2 holes in the middle of the plate. 1 at the top and one at the bottom about where the clips are (look at the new one to see). Screw 2 long screws in enough to get a good grip. Get 2 pliers and grip the screw ends firmly and give it a good tug and it should come out. If not find the how to do it procedure to remove the screen and push it out. Before you start make sure the new one is curved the right way to fit in ie it's not one from a left-hand drive car or you'll find you'll end up with drink all over your carpet.

Thanks dave, I decided to remove the centre panel - Even the plate that came out was heavy - they really didn't bother with saving weight on this car!!

It might be 10 minutes to you Adrian but to some one who's never done it before or like me who found every connector block a pig it took a couple of hours. Then time to put it back. Doing it your way is a good way to learn though and to check on those earths to make sure everything is tightened up. You could find money under the centre consul.

It's def a 10 min job guys - I wish I'd just taken the surround off in the first place - rather than waste 10 min trying to get that bleedin' plate out from the front!

what the hell? i put a cup holder in mine the other day...it took all of 2 minutes and i had to unplug nothing at all. just undo 2 screws, lift the surround out reach in behind and squeeze the clips together as u push them from the back...repeat for bottom clip..then push the plate out and simply push the cup hodler in...slot the surround back in place and put 2 screws in....how can that take hours?

that is true i did it on a jzz30...what about the surround makes a uzz32 so much more complicated? the interior is the same yeah? and u only have to pull the surround out a few inches at the top really

2 screws for the surround? What happened to the rest of them? There are two screws for the gear selector, then there are two screws under the centre cup holder, and from memory 4 or maybe even 6 more under the selector gate! (which just un-clips and has a couple of plugs on it) Then you are good to remove the surround, which also has a couple of plugs on it.
Still a very quick job requiring only two screwdrivers. I have to say its much better than drilling holes in the poor blanking cup thing, as you never know you might want to put it back in some day and it'll have holes in it!

You have to remove the whole trim piece and pop out the black backing from behind. Removing the trim piece involves six screws: two located beneath the cup holder, and four beneath the gear shift cover.
- The cup holder pops out by gripping the sidewall and pulling out. You'll see the two screws under it instantly.
- To get the shift cover out, you'll have to unscrew two screws located at the base of the shift stick. Pinch the base of the shift stick and force the plastic sleeve downwards. This exposes two screws. Remove the screws and the shift stick slides right off.
- The shift cover is held in by clips too and comes out by wedging your fingers under and pulling it out. The four screws beneath it are pretty obvious from then on. Remove them.
- The trim piece is held in by plastic clips. Wedge your fingers around it and pull the trim piece free. There are wire harnesses attached behind it, but you can leave them on. reach behind and push the black backing piece through. It should pop out. Slide the cup holder unit into the slot until it clicks into place.
- Put everything back together. Job is about five minutes.
