From my sources, a 9" rim would be ideal for your tyre but an 8.5" is fine (8.5-10 permissible). A 245/45 tyre would be ideal for your rims, and would have 2.5% higher rollout (better cruising fuel economy).

No, it would be more accurate by that margin. Currently it is optimistic, reading faster than you are travelling. With 245/45 it would be almost spot on.
This comparison is with 225/55R16 tyres which are pretty common on Soarers, especially TTs, but which themselves read slightly optimistically compared with 215/60R15 sometimes fitted to V8s.

From my experience most 255's fit perfectly on an 8.5" rim and the speedo will slightly over read but will be within the 3% tolerance.
My new tyres that I have ordered (fitted next week) I am going to be running 255/40R17 and 275/40R17. Note I do realise the 275/40R17 is a little taller than the 255's and I wanted this, hopefully should improve the balance.
