hi everyone i recently bought a set of rims which are ziel 5 work 17 x 8.5

now the tyre size that are on the rims at the moment are 255/40/R17

on a few of the tyre websites i'm noting that these size tyres are for a 9" rim not 8.5 and that alot of 8.5" rims have 245 sized tyre

which size should i be going for on these rims. obviously the 255 fits but should i be going with a 245?

is there much of difference between the two?

From my sources, a 9" rim would be ideal for your tyre but an 8.5" is fine (8.5-10 permissible).
A 245/45 tyre would be ideal for your rims, and would have 2.5% higher rollout (better cruising fuel economy).

but would the speedo then be out by 2.5%?

No, it would be more accurate by that margin. Currently it is optimistic, reading faster than you are travelling. With 245/45 it would be almost spot on.

This comparison is with 225/55R16 tyres which are pretty common on Soarers, especially TTs, but which themselves read slightly optimistically compared with 215/60R15 sometimes fitted to V8s.

From my experience most 255's fit perfectly on an 8.5" rim and the speedo will slightly over read but will be within the 3% tolerance.

My new tyres that I have ordered (fitted next week) I am going to be running 255/40R17 and 275/40R17. Note I do realise the 275/40R17 is a little taller than the 255's and I wanted this, hopefully should improve the balance.

what brand of tyre are you using for the 255/40/r17? and how much are they costing you?

i only ask because i ordered a set of faulkan's in that 255 size for $275 each

but there's a sale on firestones in 245/45

http://www.bobjane.com.au/tyreset-details/tyresetID/248/idm/17/ispt/Tyres/isu/7.html

for 209 each

this was posted on a different forum

225/55/16 = 653.9mm dia (soarer factory)
245/40/17 = 627.8mm dia
255/40/17 = 635.8mm dia
235/45/17 = 643.3mm dia (common front tire size to run)

255/40's will be closer to your factory rolling diameter.
the closer to this size (653.9mm) the more accurate your speedo will read.

What do you expect to pay for tyres??

Looking at top quality tyres in that size paying over $400 is not uncommon.

The alternative mentioned was 245/45R17, not 245/40. The former is 652 mm which is closer than 255/40, as I described above.

in fact, 245/40R17 would be illegal, more than 3% out.
