Hey,

i've been thinking about an LSD now for a few weeks, but the idea of a minispool also also gets my attention.

As for i know nothing about diffs etc, can someone tell me if i can have a minispool with the stock V8 diff, and roughly how much it will set me back.

Cheers, Sean

It would be pretty savage to drive on a daily basis but soooo much fun haha It locks the diff so your axles get a lot of stress but the upside is its very predictable (predictably loose) Im not sure what the cost would be but if you dont mind the idea of a locked diff you could weld it up for next to nothing instead

EDIT: I should add that both mini spools and welded diffs are ,technically, illegal

hey guys not 100% but i think a mini spool is alot less ratio than standard ie: alot more take off /acceleration but not as much top speed, therefor giving you alot of wheel spin very easy. i just put a trd lsd diff in my 91 twin turbo for about 1800 best thing i ever did. and i still got my standard ratio.

How would it be savage on a day to day basis?
Do you mean for wheel spin?

If not constantly driven hard, would it hold up for a few years?

Cheers guys.

With a minispool, you will have...

- A worse turning circle.
- When you turn corners your tyres will chirp.
- Ruins your tyres MUCH quicker than normal diffs.
- It will make the car harder to park/do u-turns.

Basically when you try to navigate car parks at 10km/h your wheels will chirp around corners and people will look at you and think what a try hard. I have seen a muzza in a VN done for 'loss of vehicle control' just because his tires chirped as he drove around looking for a carpark

I had a Mini Spool in my Falcon a few years back... 7 broken axles later, I finally installed an LSD into it... MUCH better! And no more broken axles!

Kyle has answered you with quite a few reasons NOT to install 1 also, which are all true.

1 thing not mentioned... Highly illegal too. As an LSD has some slip when decellerating... Mini spools are great for circuit work or drifting or drag racing, but not worth the effort if being driven on the street.

the diff centre has no effect on ratio's at all,its the crown wheel and pinion tooth count that determines the ratio.

moving along...dont get a mini spool mate, that stuff is for datsuns and r31 skylines,do it properly the first time and get an lsd
mini spools are very cheap like $150.00 on average, but you can get your diff welded for around $100 with the exact same results

I thought about welding it, but my mechanic told me that it wouldn't be long before I broke the diff..

Maybe I'll start looking for an LSD instead.

Still be more fun in the wet than the stock diff

if u get it welded properly,by someone that actually knows what they are doing you will kill something else before the diff! but yes an lsd is the go,even a torsen will be good enough for what you are after so keep an eye out on here for one

Keep in mind, that fun in the wet can easily turn into a mild disaster.

Yeah I learnt that the hard way with a previous car.....never again!

A bit of fun on the odd Sunday in the vacant estate isn't too bad though.

hey sean i put a trd lsd mechanical 1.5 way brand new for 1667. with oil seals and bearings. if i like i can take it to a diff shop and they can adust up the centre and make it a 2 way for drifting, but its very fine 1.5 for me having auto you dont get to much de-accel.

What's the difference between 1.5 and 2 way LSD?

In the wet with a mini spool, would it be hard to keep the car from not going sideways when just cruising?
