I'm about to replace all 4 shocks on my '94 TT and would like some advice on brands and costs. I can get Toyota originals for $165 each plus $30 freight, but is there another price competitive option available? I'd also like to firm up the ride just a little, but only if it isn't going to cost a lot more. Is a firmer ride likely to be a result of new shocks, or will I need to buy something a bit stiffer? If so, what can you recommend?

Cheers

With the current exchange rate induced price hikes effective 1/2/9, the OEM toyota items are probably the best bet for value. Curious about the freight charge though, I'm guessing that you don't live near a dealer and they have to send them out to you? As toyota should not charge freight just because they don't have them in stock.

Are you looking at jzz30 soarer struts? Or the jza80 supra bilstiens? Whilst most of the supra stuff is interchangeable, the struts use a shorter spring and a higher spring seat, so even with lowered soarer springs on supra stuts, your car will still sit high. Just thought I'd point that out as it is a little known fact.

As for the firmness, if your current struts are rooted, then you will notice a marginal improvement with new ones, although if you want to stiffen up the ride more notably, then you will need to look at new springs as well.

new KYBs or Bilsteins are about $100-120 ea, i cant remeber off the top of my head, i would know at work in the morning.

Basically the OE shocks would have been made by KYB in the first place so same quality in the aftermarket.

Bilstiens are really nice, but new they are dear, think $1000ish
But worth it in every sense, also lets you lower the car too :-)

The front springs from a Supra are interchangeable with the Soarer's but the Rears are not, the spring seats are different diameters, if your going for Supra springs they need supra struts.
I think you may have it around the wrong way with the front springs. Going by the King springs website the lowered Front springs for the Soarer are the same as the stock height for the Supra. Assuming this is correct you could pick up a set of stock Supra front springs for around a 25mm lower ride height.

Thanks all. I'll make some inquiries about KYBs and Bilsteins and find out if they're competitive. As much as I'd like to lower the ride a little, affordability is my primary concern.

Ben, the Toyota price is through an acquaintance in Qld (I live in Vic) who would organise the parts for me wholesale. He says that retail they'd be $253. Do you think that sounds about right?

As for using Supra or Soarer bits and what's interchangeable etc, I have no idea!! Is this something I should look into?

Guy, $253 for a set of 4 genuine Toyota springs sounds OK to me. Be careful swapping Soarer and Supra bits. I put in JZA80 springs and struts and subsequently, my car sits about 1 inch lower than where I would like it. All my own fault for not doing the proper research.

$253 would be each David, I highly doubt toyota would sell anything that cheap! lol

I don't know about retail, as my local toyota dealer gives me maximum trade discount due to all the group buys I've done through them. I just bought a pair of jza80 bilstien rears, and they set me back $167 each overnight delivery including gst.
