Just fitted my diff yesterday and went out today and put about 100ks on it, got home and got underneath to check for leaks etc and i noticed the casing is pretty warm! I can only hold my hand on it for about 3-5 seconds before it gets painful.

I did do my research and put the right oil in, is it normal for torsen diffs to get pretty hot?

cheers

I do know that torsen diffs run hotter than an open diff, which is why they have additional cooling fins?

What oil are you using in the diff?
I myself will be fitting a JZA80 Torsen soon.

Straight swap, no hassles?

i used 80w-140 gl-5/gl-6

Yep its an easy swap, literally unbolt old diff bolt up new one. Only awkward thing is wrestling the new diff into postion.
You'll definately be a happy man once you've got it in though :-)

hey neil, at the moment i have castrol syntrax in my diff, was recomended it by the previous owner and we had it at the workshop.

Its a fully synthetic oil, how would you rate it? Or should i dump it for something else?

Hmm just put 80w/140 in mine and it is a Torsen from a TT soarer. By the looks of things it has not had the oil replaced before. Neil would you recommend 75/90?

140 is an oil for old sckool diffs.

I have run 75w/90 for many years in Torsen and Stock, Not that there is a need to be different for either, these also do Track and Drags.

75w and 80w/90 are the more common oils for diffs these days. As they are better for shear / drag / heat, which makes better fuel efficiency.

Scott & James... You both live in cold climates ( well in winter time anyways ) change when the sun dissapears.

Most diff oils these days are either part or full syn..Full Syn will help with heat dissipation.

IM running 75/90 in a Diff i got from Neil a couple of years ago !!!

Still runs fine . That 140 is too thick and will get too hot fellas.

Oh, Always UNDO the FILL nut before undoing the DRAIN NUT . Some guys have had the Fill nut strip and couldnt open it to fill her up , Always after they drain it !!! Not pleasant, lol .

I have for years. I can't remember exactly how much it was, but I had some left over from a 1L bottle, so maybe 1.5L?

I recorded all the wet capacities when I did a major service a few years back and put them on a laminated card. Unfortunately this is neatly stowed in my glovebox, and I'm nowhere near the car...
