over the past couple of days i've been losing power in my car when driving around town dash lights go dim. waring lights appear in dash once i put the foot back down the lights go bright and its back to normal. (these warning lights are obviously appearing due to power loss to module, sensor etc) what i mean by driving around town is that it happens when i slow down for traffic, red light etc and there is not much load on the engine.
i drove on the freeway yesterday and it was fine because i was at a constant speed and wasn't stop/starting etc
to me it sounds like a alternator/battery problem. what are your thoughts? note: its not just the dash that loses power its a range of things from ac unit lcd back-light going dim and head-unit turning on and off.

Yup alternator or battery problem, that would be my bet.
Check your battery terminals are clean and secure. Could also be your alternator dying (hopefully not though)
I recently changed my alternator on my Starlet after having the same issues. I considered getting my one rebuilt for a few hundred but then just pulled a similar one off another Toyota from the wreckers and installed that. Works a charm and i only paid 30 bucks!
I know HEAPS of parts are interchangable with Toyotas so i would be pulling it off and then comparing a few if you run into dramas finding one... but plenty of soarers being wrecked also and they may fit?

thanks for your post James. yeah im hoping its not the alternator dying but i have this sad feeling that it is. and yes there are lots of 1uz soarers been parted out so i should be able to find a replacement alternator without much trouble (hopefully) if need be. i will check the battery terminals today and will let you know how i go. also the battery needed for the celsior is the same size as what would fit into a 4wd (larger car) im guessing because of all the electrics it has. i at the moment only have a regular size battery in the celsior at the moment its been in there for a year now its been working fine but could this also be the problem?

I'll put money on it that it's the alternator. Had the same ting happen to the wife. Change the battery all was fine for a short time, then bang all the light's went out. Long way from home and in the middle of no where. Get look it to before you get stuck.Trust Me
