G'day all. I'm in the process of getting a new exhaust system for my Celsior and its going terribly. I've fitted custom headers using the stock cats into 2 1/2" pipework back. From there it merges with a y-pipe into a 1m lenth of 3" then back to twin 2 1/2" with another Y-pipe. From there i use twin resonators and finally lukeys. The problem is, it drones and sounds terrible. Is the pipe-work too large or is the 3" pipe too long?

Yes yes, size does count with NA engines. I was going to use 2.5" piping for the exhaust on my soarer but went for 2.25" as its good for low end torque etc. Unfortunately that never happened as i sold the car but i got as far a buying those superb lukey mufflers. Hopefully ill be able to buy more and install them on the celsior if i buy it!

Yah! Im trying to do this a fast as i can. First I Have to look at this Celsior and check it out up close for a hour or so on Friday. Put a deposit on it if its all good. Then sell my excellent condition 1996 Honda Rafaga CS that has a genuine 48,500kms done! At the Ellerslie Car Fair on Sunday. Its a really nice car. Im 100% sure some person will buy it. A - its in tidy condition, B - its only 10 years old with low kms and C - it looks good as being the sporty model with recaro seats. I got it valued at around 8.0 so will try for around 7.0 7.5k

Heres a Pic

Upload

Good car but no where near as luxurous as the celsior.

Oh any way back to the X pipe topic.. sorry about that

They are a very nice car for what they are. 5 cylinder as well. Quite unique... It one of those cars that people like. 2 Litre.. good on gas etc.

But its Not enough car for me though! I feel every single imperfection in the road. Its shocking! In both ways. This is where the celsior will just be superb (ride quality). Plus Ive got to that point where i dont care about spending $100+ for a Tank of gas - just means ill have to fork out the extra cash more often... Regarding gas I was so pathetic with the soarer - I suppose it was because i wasnt used to spending more on a gas compared to other cars. Well i wont be trying to be mr ecconomical this time!

More high way driving may be advisable though. City traffic is a killer for ecconomy in v8s!

Barry, how loud do you want it to be?

If you like the rumble then you could just run 2.5" pipe from the cats back to 2 Lukey Hi-Flo mufflers at the rear.

On my Soarer, lovely note, relatively quiet in the car with the windows up, but full strength outside if you have the pedal down.

Quite a few members here can testify to the quality of the sound.

Or if you feel that might be a little too sporty for a Celsior, just add an X-pipe and possible a resonator to each side to have it a bit milder. Ken Bruns has had his Celsior done and the milder but still obviously V8 sound suits the style of his car more.

Did you ever get any more sound recordings of the exhaust note?

Not done any for ages :-(

The problem is that with the windows up it's pretty quiet, but with the windows down the mic picks up the wind noise and freaks out a bit.

Drive by recordings offer the best result in that sense, but then you get the car coming in and going away, not what it's actually like going along with the car.

I don't know of anyone that has some decent portable recording gear that might include wind resistant microphones.

Barry;
as Neil said above mate
I did some thing simular
twin 2 1/2" to just past the gearbox
then a complete 3" all the way through to a rear muffler
BUT from the back of the gearbox to the rear muffler you have to add another 2 mufflers to shut it up and then it is still reasonable loud
i went to twin 2 1/2" all the way through and lost a heap of power
mate go the twin 2 1/4 all the way through put a cross pipe in there or an "X" pipe
a couple of small hot dogs under the back seat area and then your mufflers at the back
cheers mate

actually it would be less than that from Ross... i paid under a grand for cats and pipework and fitting headers. (headers not included in that price)
he is good.
tell him to make it with flanges though so you can bolt it apart if need be.
or try the muffler man on malvern road in Prahran (or south yarra ) he has also been good to me.

Finally got my car HALF sorted. The problem all along was CRACKED headers I installed at the same time. So now i'm running left aftermarket header, stock right header 2 1/2" back and it sounds SWEET. Like a 4L WRX.
