This forums is by far the slowest I have ever visited - makes browsing frustrating, I love the forum but it irks me having to wait for it to catch up all the time!

Matthew, we have never had complaints about speed - except perhaps for those using dialup.

However one of two threads have a lot of images that are slowing just those threads down.

If people use thumbnails to post pictures hosted on another site, that can cause issues too, but is due to the external server, not SC.

It takes 4 seconds from clicking a link to resolving the homepage (minimal graphics) searching takes ages.
I'm using a 1.5mb connection and every other forum I surf is lighting compared to this - including many based overseas.

It looks like Telstra is having some issues. I ran a trace from Canberra and it died after a couple of hops. Your IP also doesn't resolve - another Telstra problem, though not one that should affect performance.

This thread took less than 1 second to load on a 512kbps ADSL link. The forum isn't slow here.

I agree. Very frequently it times out in getting new messages, or just takes forever. I pressed the 'new messages' button some 15 min's ago, and nothing happened for 30 seconds, so I went to another web page. Don't know how long it took to come up, but it sure was slow enough for me to give up.

This is consistent with both home and work, and has been happening as long as I've been on the forum.

Welcome to the internet :-) specially considering your using telstra. Just because one site works fine doesn't necessarily mean that another site will.

To be brutally honest, now that I understand how the internet works, I am truly astonished that it works it all!

This forum is so slow for me too. I'm on 512k, and when i get restricted to 128k after using my monthly quota, I open a page, go do something and later come back to kill time as its that slow. I'm with Optus. However I absolutely love this forum and believe the waiting is a small price to pay

Guys, I will see if I can get what appear to be some routing issues investigated.

Apart from Telstra, there appear to be issues with the Telstra/Optus gateway. I have noticed odd behaviour on various traceroutes at times, but hoped that the techs in charge of the routers knew what they were doing. However as some people appear to be getting excessive delays, then those issues ned to be looked at.

Well, I'm based in NZ and have no complaints - my internet link at work is a crappy 2Mbps with heavy traffic and this site still flies. My 3.5Mbps ADSL at home is faster still.

I use IE7 mostly - this is over 4-5 different computers and download speed of 1500k and above.

This morning, pages took several minutes to open. One had not opened after 45min, but came up straight away after I hit the red X and did a refresh.

(Did it again on this post. Took 3 refreshes to get to the preview)

Problem if you do that on the new posts, you lose the posts it is trying to display, and only get the last few seconds worth.

Sounds like flakey ISP's are the cause.

If you are with iiNet they are rooted atm! ;)

Get rid of IE, now that would be a good start!

It sounds like you having some major routing issues connecting to SC.

Unfortunately diagnosing such problems can be very very difficult (had plenty of phone calls from South Africa at 3am in the morning wondering why they can't access our mail server etc.) for starters who's your ISP?

Secondly get Spybot S&D
http://safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

Update it and scan your computer. Spyware can do funny things. You may not notice on other sites, but if you are already having packet loss to SC then Spyware can be the straw that breaks the camels back.

For better browsing, try a standards compliant browser:

For those that have problems, can you do a traceroute to soarercentral.com and email the results to admin @ soarercentral.com

Open a command prompt, type
"tracert soarercentral.com > trace.txt" (without the quotes), hit enter.

then attach the trace.txt file to an email. The trace.txt file probably got created in C:\

Nah Peter, that will send it to the user's local profile! =P

Try this guys (it achieves the same thing!)

Open a command prompt (Click start -> Click run -> enter 'cmd' without the quotes and click ok) and enter this command:-
tracert soarercentral.com > C:\docume~1\%username%\desktop\trace.txt

It will dump the results to a text file on your desktop! ;)

Strange.. i wonder if it has something to do with XP Home / Professional kitouts.... Home doesn't promote the use of user accounts where as Pro does..

A note to people as well, the tracert command may take a long time to run on soarercentral.com
When i tested it, it resolved the first 4 hops however then started to time out over the following hops....

Some hops timing out is normal, as some routers don't respond to trace route. It's slow hops that we are looking for.

Example, this is a trace run from a Telstra server in Melbourne, which has a few non-responding hops, but there aren't any slow hops.

traceroute to
