Hey guys,

My 92 sc400 has been sitting uninsured and unregistered for around one and a half months outside my place. i went to start it the other day and when i tried to start it nothing happened. the dash came on but i could not put down the windows, open the sunroof and then console was dead. Is this simply a battery issue? or a fuse?

also, my front right air bag suspension has failed again - rest assured i will not be taking it back to the same mechanic to get fixed. is it possible to buy 4 standard second hand suspension from a soarer tt and pay someone to chuck em on seeing as the air bags are just too expensive to keep replacing for a poor uni student that needs to save 2 months just for rego etc.

any help would be greatly appreciated!! cheers :-)

It will be the battery, and after 6weeks your car will sit low.

Swapping to coil-plus-strut suspension is very common, and was one of the first things I did, as my car also had a defective airbag strut.
While it's a pity to down-spec a UZZ31, the positives are that you should be able to pick up a good set of struts & springs for under half the price of ONE new strut, the changeover is easy and straightforward (remember to pull the pump fuses and disconnect the suspension controller), and the result is a slightly less comfortable but better handling car.
I used a UZZ30 suspension in mine. Don't forget you must make sure you get the top mounts, as these are integrated in the air struts and cannot be removed. Supra struts and springs will also work, I believe.
If you find TEMS equipped struts, the TEMS system cannot be easily be deployed on the UZZ31, as this car uses a totally different TEMS system to coil sprung cars - you could still use the TEMS struts though.
I believe that new UZZ30 struts may still be available from Castle Hill Toyota - I remember a post about this not long ago.
If you get a really cheap set of clapped out UZZ30 units, it might be worth spending a bit over $400-$500 on a new set of struts for them before the install.
Regarding your battery - Soarers do tend to drain the battery if left parked for a long time. Possibly disconnect the boot light, as it can stay on, plus if you have an alarm, it might be worth looking up a fix to stop current leaking back through the alarm. This amounts to, from memory, adding a diode to a relay box in the drivers footwell, and is cheap and easy, once you get the box out!

ok cool cheers,
does anyone have a picture of what a air bag suspension should look like? if the outercover has a slit in it is that a problem? or is that just a cover to protect the actual air bag itself

Here's a photo of a couple of airbag struts I took out of mine. The actual airbag sits inside the plastic cover seen strapped to the mid-section. If the plastic cover were split, I wouldn't expect this to affect the airbag itself, but I would be taking it off the car and doing a full inspection anyway.

New shocks are available for the UZZ30. I just put in new KYB shocks in my 30, around $120 each from Autopro.
Made a lot of difference to the ride.
May replace the air bags on my 31 yet with springs. I have a spare set, and no, they are not for sale
If you dont intend to use your car straight away, disconnect the battery. I had my 31 parked for 2 months, and same problem.
