Guys, I went for an agressive run around the country side on the weekend and now my rear engine seal is leaking oil. It only seems to leak just after the engine has stopped and seems to settle down when it cools down.
Is replacing the seal an easy job? What would have caused the leak?

Neil, is there a trick to removing the PCV valves?
I removed the hose on the passangers side one and the valve was spinning but it wouldn't come out from the top.
I'll try to jack up the car and have a good look, but the oil seems to be dripping down from the bottom of the bell housing. I'm hoping like hell that it is the came cover seals.

Anish,,You WILL probably destroy the rubber grommet that holds the PCV mate..Get a new grommet first (Toyota) then pull like crazy on it..It will then pop up..New PCV is not expensive as well.

Pulled the hose off and sucked on the valve. Was a bit sticky but was still moving.
Jacked up the car, the oil leak is coming from under the black inspection cover on the back of the engine where the bell housing bolts on.
Seal only seems to leak when the engine is turning. Once the engine has sat for an hour and the residual oil has dripped out, it dosn't seem to leak anymore.
Neil, what's involved in replacing the seal and how many hours labour should I expect to pay for to do it?
I have access to a pit but only for about 3 hours at a time, not sure if this is enough given that will need about an hour for the engine to cool down before starting.

I had the rear engine seal go in my V8. It caused a smoke screen when the oil dripped onto the exhaust at speed on the motorway. Peter Pilkington in Sydney installed a new one for me for about $700. My gearbox was difficult to remove because I have extractors fitted, but he was just able to get it out by cutting the tube for the dip stick to the auto box.

Anish, if you only have the pit for 3 hours, then drive there maybe 2 hours beforehand before you can use it to let your car cool down.
As I dont have a v8 I couldn't say how long it would take, but with a pit and on a TT, I reckon you could do it in 3 hours. With a helper or two.
Remove tail shaft from auto box, Remove dust cover and remove bolts holding on torque converter, remove gearbox mounts, remove bell housing from engine. Drop gearbox. Remove flywheel, remove seal...put in new seal and reverse procedure.

A lady takes her car to the mechanic. The mechanic checks the the car and tells the lady "It looks like you blew a seal" the lady answers back wiping her mouth "No, that just a little mayonaise from lunch!"

So a penguin is driving along and his car breaks down. He takes it to the mechanic and he says it will take him about an hour to fix it. So the penguin decides to go to the nearby 7-11 to get some icecream. Since penguins dont have long arms, he got icecream all over his face. An hour later he goes back to the mechanic, the mechanic says "It looks like you blew a seal"

A believable, modified version for Perry...
So a man is driving along and his car breaks down. He takes it to the mechanic and he says it will take him about an hour to fix it. So the man decides to go for a walk. On the way back to the garage, he decided to call in at the 7-11 to get some icecream. The man had a beard and as it was a hot day, the icecream got all over it. He then goes back to the mechanic, the mechanic says "It looks like you blew a seal". The man says," no it's only icecream".

Anish Hi, you should still change the PCV valve. from the symptoms you describe it is almost certainly not working correctly. Under normal conditions the inside of the crankcase is at a slight vacuum relative to the atmosphere. When the long internal spring in the valve goes, internal pressure builds up and a rear seal oil leak is often the first symptom. By all means change the seal but do the PCV valve as well or it could be a short term fix.

Roger, ordered the valve. Will take 2 days to get to Brisbane. $38.75 and $6 for the grommet. I pulled the old one out and cleaned it up last night but it still took a lot of effort to make the valve open. The oil leak dosn't seem to be as bad so I'm hoping the new valve will take care of the leak.
I'm not going to do the seal until I have a reason to need to take the gearbox off or I need to top up the oil more than once a fortnight.

Anish, I have been having very similar problems to you (as explained on a separate SC thread). Did it solve your problem, and have you got the part number for a new seal please?

Thrown the packaging away. Send Neil an email. He'll have a part number for sure. My local lexus dealer had the films for the soarer and looked it up for me.
Replacing the seal did solve the problem. Make sure you change the oil after replacing the seal. There's no way of knowing if crud got in while the seal was being replaced.
You might want to budget for a rear gearbox mount as well while the gearbox is off. If your rear transmission seal is leaking, it may have softened up the seal and caused the metal to separate from the rubber.

yeah i've blown the rear seal and got my mechanic to have a quick look at it on the hoist. He quoted me 500-600 for 1-2 days work. Same issue you are having Anish - leaks when driving hard/extended periods and stops after the engine cools down.

Guys I need my rear seal replaced as when I had my car on the hoists recently it was leaking. Not blowing smoke yet. So from what I've read I'm of the understanding that it should cost about 58 dollars for the part and around 300 - 400 to fit?
