I just changed the oil in the GF's soarer and she took it around the block.
When she returned it was making a weierd sound.
I pulled the bonnet and it kind of sounds like a regular sound of something rotating but not on every rotation, say every third rotation.
It is like a faint knocking sound maybe from the cams but I can't tell.
I replaced the oil with Shell Ultra which is the same Oil I have used the previous 5 changes without issues, the filter was replaced also.
The only thing I can think of is that the age of the engine may actually require a thicker oil now
(currently collecting info for the pseudo 100k service (dash says 90 but engine says the timing belt has already been replaced at 100k))?
It seems too coincidental that this sound has only just now developed immediately after an oil change.
Has anyone else had any similar experiences after changing their oil?

I know this may sound stupid, but did you put the sump plug back in after draining the oil, and refilling? Any oil on the dipstick?
Wouldnt be the first time it has happened.

okay this was done last night at 11 something.
Sump plug was indeed put in (and i replaced the washer which i think was the first time it has been replaced believe it or not)

I checked the level last night and it was actually very low but i know all 5 litres went in. (i figured it was just draining back so i left it until this morning)

this morning there was a SLIGHT (read 2 drops) leak from the filter are so i tightened that a little more with my hand (given the limited space). Also tested the oil level again and it was indeed full.

drove it to the shops and then back again but the noise is still there.
I can definately hear the injectors and it isn't them making the noise, it's definately more metallic, kind of like a slight knocking. But it doesn't happen every revolution of the engine. more like knocking for four or five times over a 3 second interval then it goes away then it comes back another 3 seconds later.

(this is reminding me of scratch and sniff, you just can't express the full feeling over the internet)

knocking sound but not constant? could be a coincidence, could be a belt or pulley that slightly out of balance maybe? and youve only just noticed it?

i could however, be completely wrong

but something similar happened to me, and it was the fan belt pulley I THINK

i am hoping that , but it could be an expensive hope if it is something a little more... the 100k service is almost up for it so if it is something menial then it will hopefully get replaced when i do the timing belt.

Well only time will tell i guess if the knocking sound is very very bad or just a slight thing i haven't noticed before.
I will probably find out within a week (if not sooner :-) )

If you have still got some oil left I would try putting a LITTLE more in. this will increase the oil pressure and you will immediately find out if the knocking is due to the oil or oil pressure. You will of course have to take the oil back out again, once you have tested it.

2nd thing is, you didn't knock any piping off your manifold when you were changing the oil filter did you? ..just have a general check around

I have had a knocking noise in a 1jz before but it was constant and would be quicker when revs increased. It turned out to be a foreign metal particle that got into the cylinder. I think that the fact that it is not constant is a good thing. I would listen to all the pulleys etc. as well as doing what Anton said.

Use a long screwdriver on the engine and your ear on the handle to try and pinpoint the sound.

well it came back :?
i tried the screwdriver thing, it's really cool it is like listening to the bowles of the engine.
anyway I report it is sounding like the front of the engine. I think it is in the timing chain area but it is hard to pinpoint maybe also around cylinder 1.
It is rythmic so it is in timing with the engine revolution, maybe 2-3 knocks a second.
I tried putting the screwdriver on the accessories belt tensioner as i heard they can make noise but i didn't get anything tried a few other parts at the front with no difinitive point.
I will keep looking.
