A fair while ago I treated my windscreen with Rain-X. Stuff was awesome! But several months later I had forgotten about it and I went to clean my windscreen with some Armourall glass cleaner and it smeared the out of it. I looked at it confused for a minute, then remembered, then slapped myself on the forehead.

So my question is: what can I use to dissolve the small remaining amount of rain-x on my windows? Would a metho/water combination work? Or maybe just warm soapy water?

I can't help you with that but it's a good question. I definitely second your opinion on Rain-X though. I did a side by side comparison on the windscreen and it was an amazing improvement.

What is Rain-x? There should be no reason why it should leave a coating on the window, I wouldn't use such product.

It's designed to stay on your windscreen, it fills the microscopic holes in the glass and makes it ultra smooth so that any water that lands on your windscreen simply beads and rolls off. It almost makes wipers redundant

I use C-thru window cleaner paste, Autoglym glass polish and C-thru glass shield which put some petroleum based protectant on the glass.

They all works wonders. No smearing!

A steam squeegee (set to low steam) should remove any residue.

Not trying that, just read what happened to the OP.

No product should be made that adds a coating on your windscreen, that is just asking for trouble when it does eventually wear off e.g when you have to clean dust buildup on the windscreen and it begins to smudge.

Windex and Newspaper work fine for me, If in the case of a windscreen with small swirl damage or mini chips window polish works to a degree.

Windex and newspaper don't leave a residue on the windscreen? I've been using Rain-X for years and it works fine. I even tried it on motorcycles visors in the last years of my riding and it also worked well, even though Rain-X is not designed for perspex/acrylic. I have more problems with residues on the inside of the screen (I assume from hot climate heating plastics inside and leaving milky crap on the glass). I've tried the Rain-X inside/demist product and it's not as effective as the stuff for the outside, although my wife said it was good on her snorkelling goggles:-)

If you remove it thoroughly it wont leave a residue, and even if you don't it's not too bad.

I have never had this problem, it works perfect and doesn't smudge with any glass cleaners I have used before.

I would highly recommend Rain-X.

It smudged because of the Armourall not because of the rain-x.

Go and spray Armourall on your windscreen and see how hard it is to get off even without Rain-X.

Rain-X here on many cars over the past 10-15 years. Never had a problem. I actually get annoyed driving other peoples cars who don't use it. I have no idea how they drive with only a half a second visibility after the wiper passes over the glass before puddles of water distort everything again.

I have heard everything: Rain-X ruins your glass, Rain-X ruins your paint, Rain-X ruined the ozone layer, Rain-X molested my cat...

If you dont want to use Rain-X its pretty easy to apply your wax to your windows as well as the car body the next time you wax.
Use something cheap and nasty that lasts (ie, Turtle wax) and you only need to worry about it once a year.

And why would you want to do this? Once it begins to rain and the wipers begin working, the wax will be moved around and will lift off, making the windscreen very foggy.

Do not do this.

I have never had a problem with it in the past. The layer stays clear and rain beads as it would on the rest of the car.

If its going cloudy or foggy then you arent doing it right.

Boris,
Not trying to be rude but you seem to offer a lot of advice without any knowledge on the issue or having actually done it yourself.
Callum has tried it as he has said and its works for him and I can't see why it wouldn't work but I havn't tried so I can't comment.

And you seem to think to know what I have and have not actually done myself.

I waxed my window with Turtle wax, and once it began to rain, with the wipers constantly rubbing the wax across the place, mixing in with the rain it got very blurry, was extremely dangerous to drive. Getting it off took a while too.

Which is the reason why I am giving this advice.

If you get a drive through wash and wax, it's going to go all over the glass, but I haven't noticed lots of lawsuits about the glass being foggy.

Which is why I clean my windows with window cleaner and make sure I remove all the residue, and that is how I keep my windows shiny.

You said quite clearly that you hadn't used Rain-X but advise not to use it, based on what?
It is designed for that exact purpose and probably sold in the millions by now and but we should all stop using it because it smeared when mixed with Armourall.

As for the wax on the windscreen, I have never applied it myself but have been through many car washes with wax and never had a problem.

I wasn't trying to be rude but you seem to have answers that may be somewhat misguided.

Perhaps you didnt apply enough elbow grease when buffing the wax layer "off"?
