I am thinking of building a fun car and wonder if the Soarer is to heavy to be a short tight track car?

In my opinion, I think they could be. My TT only weighs 1560kg on the papers, Thats a whole 150kg's lighter than an XR6 Turbo sedan and 250 KG lighter than an XR8. R8 Clubsport tips the scales around the 1760 mark.

So i cant see why a soarer wouldnt do well on a track. As long as the Gear ratio is set up for it, and better stopping power. And the fact a Soarer can produce similar HP numbers(if not more :-) ) to those cars mentioned above.
(they are just a couple of cars off the top of my head)
It takes more than just some more HP and Stiff suspension to really sort out a track car though.
On shorter tracks, you are looking for a good Torque Band rather than max HP. You want something fast out of corners, so you have to make an engine/gear ratio package around that!

Take a look into the Japanese racing ranks. A circuit car that may normally make 450hp, may be squeezed out to 550-600 on a long fast flowing track, but on a shorter track, mayb only produce 400 hp but bucket loads of more useable tractable torque.
I guess you have to decide how far you want to take the " track " road of mods :-)

You could always get yourself a '32. That would do it.
A '32 with a blower and everything should be just about perfect.

32s are hard to find and I am afraid that they might need alot more attention if driven hard, was thinking of a 30 or TT. Haven't driven a TT, how is the lag on a tight track?

Just keep the revs up. WRX's don't seem to have any problems.

WRX's have antilag though.. well.. the rally spec ones do ;D

WRX isnt really a track car.

32's as in uz32? Would be quite heavy for track use, considering how many gadgets they have!

Im not sure the suspension on them is suited to high performance cornering either? But then thats only guessing. Im more than 90% likely wrong with that comment =P

If you were dead set serious on track racing with a Soarer you would need to strip everything out anyway and replace with performance stuff, in which case having a 32 wouldnt be an advantage over a uz30 or 31 would it?

There are a fair few guru's on the forums who do track racing though. Mabe one of them should speak up and shut me up >.>

I would think the point of having a 32 as a track car would be to strip everything out bar the suspension :-)

I dont really think it would be suitable anyway as with a serious track car you need to be able to adjust the handling and with a 32 its not like you can just change an anti-roll bar or stiffen up the springs/dampers....

Soarers are luxury cars, there are many better options out there for a track car. Stripping out a Soarer sort of defeats the purpose.

Go for GTR maybe, or a hardcore Supra!

The big advantage for the 32 that gets overlooked, is the 4 wheel steering.

Decent brakes and tyres, TT LSD for more low grunt, and you would have a very nice track car for short twisty circuits.

Check Peter Sott's various pages about track days at Mallala which probably classifies as the type or track you might have in mind.

Got to be lucky and fine a beat up one that is mechanically fine, just like Mark P did recently. Will a car with the interior stripped out be street legal in WA? Would be a pain to have to put it on a trailer to get it to the track.

For short tight tracks your better off with a lite weight car with a short wheelbase. It'll be more chuckable and generally a lot faster for the amount of cash thrown at it. You can't go wrong with something like an s14/s15 200sx rx7 s4,s5,s6 or even older s2/s3.

Or, staying with the toyotas - AE86, MR2, or even a turbo corolla...

My personal choice for a motorkhana/tight track car would be either an MR2, turbo MX5, or a WRX...or an old-school mini, 1275 cooper S engine and box, disc brake front end, re-done suspension. Mini would be cheap as chips too, in comparison. And they did win Bathurst in the late 60's up against the big V8 Mustangs, remember. Love watching that footage, cheeky little Minis nipping on the heels of the big V8s round the corners.

Ultimate track car - Ariel Atom. No body work - chassis forms like an exoskeleton for the car. Supercharged Honda civic type R engine. Puts out more power to weight than an Enzo, does 0-100 in 2 seconds. I want one

Agreed on the Atom Shane.

I reckon the old school MR2s would be fun around a track, get the supercharged one!

Starting to lean towards an old 4 door Corolla or Lancer.

Would love to have an Atom, but if I had to spend that kind of money I would get a vintage Super 7.

Infact this all came about because I got to drive my old S2 Super 7 yesterday. The new owner had only put on 5200miles on it in the last 22 years. Say what you want, but even with just 156 horses under the hood, a light mid engine car like that it is a blast to drive, even by today's standards.

Nah for proper track racing i'd go a Soarer... thing is it doesnt *have* to be the ideal car to start with, if you look at what cars race at the local meetings as long as you have something with some potential its all good, there are far more important things that get results like *driving ability*

Plus variety is the spice of life.... otherwise everyone would be driving turbo rotarys or v8 commodores

I wouldn't go anything that is FWD for a short track car.

AWD and 4WS is the way to go, WRX GTR evo could all do well.

MR2 not sure I have heard very good and very bad things about them.

They supposedly have one of the best balanced chassis in the world yet everyone I know who has driven one says they handle very poorly and would much prefer a MX5.

But on that thought does anyone here have any experience with a MR2. They have crossed my mind a few times given the fuel efficiency.

Go the AE86, with a 4AGE Turbo or supercharged setup. Or if you win lotto, a formula Atlantic 4AGE Engine....UNBEATABLE!!!

GTR is too heavy to be good at short tight tracks. Just look at what happens at wakefield, they get creamed by the cheaper povo 200sx's.

I do strongly agree with the driving skills statement. Just look at a motor mag pcoty issue were they test at wakefield park with Rick Bates. He was able to put a stock standard corolla sportivo around wakefield park is 1:14. Thats f***en flying.

I'm looking for a stripped out , souped up RX7 S 4,5 or 6 to use as a dedicated track weapon. 50/50 weight balance , good factory brakes , gearbox , engines are reasonable cheap to re-build. All for about $15,000. Should flog the pants off the $45K Evo's & WRX's getting around. And I can stop wearing out my Soarer at the track!!

I do, but kinda limited. Have driven one in anger a few times, was owned by an uncle. They are well-balanced....right up until the snap-oversteer part. This, I've not experienced while driving, but have been in the passenger seat - I was never game enough to push it that hard. As I said, my experience is very limited.

Main issue with them I can see is the mid-engine setup being a right b*ch to work on.

Yeah, just get a old school Sprinter and dump a rebuilt 4AGZE in it. They can still mix in with the current best in the Japanese circuit racing and drifting comps, quite often win too!

How much weight difference is there between a GTR and a 200sx I thought it was only about 150 to 200kg.

Considering the extra traction and power I would have thought they would preform very similar with the GTR better out of corners.

I doubt it, as the car would be registered as a 4/5 seater car, and you will only have 1 seat.

You arent allowed to drive around with any pannels off in a car afaik.. at least in WA.

That means Andreas has been in the bad for a while now since he has had his drivers side door trim off since.. forever.
