Hi, all I am a newbie, just picked up my UZZ31 1994 LTD fresh out of japan. After compliancing organised a permit to drive Melb - Canberra. Left in the early hours last SAT morning,no dramas till after Albury just after 1st light.1ST Police car I see chases me and pulls me over. (notice your car has no plates mate ?)NO but I do have this pemit.He asks about what type of car it is (like the look) and advises me not to speed, If thou I would!!!!!!. Delay approx 5 min. Off a go and about an HOUR DOWN THE ROAD I past a Police car on the side of the road,same thing ,sirens on ,I am pulled over again.This guy is very abrupt and spends 20 minutes trying to prove my paper work is a fake.Off I go again and 1/2 hour later on the oppisite side of the dual carriage way another one observes (no number plate)He brakes hard, turns right across the medium strip looses control and beaches his patrol car in the mud between the dual carriage way. Best if I don't go back,I have a late morning appointment in Canberra.
Now all I have to do to drive my new purchase is REGO . Yes you guest it FAILED Rear tint to dark and I have to get a weight for the Soarer via a way bridge, $15 LATER 1620 and now I can rego my car. NO!!! re book for re inspection will take a week, they are too busy. NOT FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN. I am a little miffed but Soarer owners are made of sterner stuff and they have only delayed my enjoyment and made the anticipation all the keener. ACT REGO MAKES YOU WONDER ?????????/}}

Bob. Seems you had a bit of problem getting it home.

Looking at it another way: Isn't it good that they DO stop cars without number plates? I think taking 20 minutes about verifying the details is a bit long though.

Loved that bit as well Justin.

Great post. Upload

Welcome, Bob. We had a similar(ish) experience coming off Norfolk Island early 2002. Our car was registered Norfolk Island (Au territory) but to drive it around I had to get an Unregistered Vehicle Permit to drive it to Qld where we were moving (to get the CTP-type insurance, which comes with Full-Comprehensive insurance on Norfolk as there are no CTPs, and, yes, the Comprehensive wasn't valid on the mainland...).

The Registry asked me "what do you want a permit for if it's registered NI?" "I need the CTP" "buy a CTP" "can't, it's registered NI". With shipping & AQIS delays (birds shat on it!) it was a complete nightmare. God knows what it would have been like with a non-Au complied car (this was with an Au-delivered Liberty!)

Anyway we were fine once we got all this crap done, no copper looked twice at the NI plate (4 digits only, probably all thought NSW personalise plates as black & yellow) and we drove like this for 6 weeks.

Hi Bob
Looks like you had some fun.
Well I have to do it on Saturday from Melbourne to Sydney in my new 1996 Active. No plates either. So I will have the same type of problems, but luck if I still see the one in the mud!
