In the interest of all Victorians (myself included) looking to legally upgrade their current rims/tyres, I have trawled the majority of the internet threads on rim/tyre sizes etc,. however there are a few local (Vic) legal issues that may not been considered.

The Vic Roads "Guide to Modifications to Motor Vehicles" (Section #8) states that; "The width of any replacement rim must not be 25mm greater than the widest wheel specified by the manufacture for that model of vehicle, or vehicle series;" AND "The overall diameter of any replacement rim and tyre must not be more than 15mm greater than the largest diameter tyre specified by the manufacture for that model of vehicle, or vehicle series, plus a few other standard requirements..

Keeping the original manufacture tyre/rim sizes and these legal limitations in mind, does any one have a list of possible 17&18 inch combinations for us strictly controlled Victorian folk?

That will vary depending on the tyre placard that was fitted to your vehicle when it was complied.

some already have a 17" wheel on the placard, while others ionly 16"....

Have a look on your tyre placard which is located on the end of your drivers door probably. It is a small card that states all the rim/tyre sizes on your car.

Mine states 16" 215's with a 60 profile tyre. Some TT's say 225's.

So, I bought 18" 235 with 40 profile tyre to remain legal. Hope it helps.

If it's 225/50 R16 doesn't that mean you can run 245/40 R18's?

That's 20mm wider, 255's would be 30mm wider and over an inch? Therefore not legal.

what the heck does 7.0jj mean ?

I thought 7.0 meant 7" and the JJ is the load rating of the tyre.

My placard reads 245/40 So I went to 265/40 and kept within 5mm of legal widths.

Hope it helps.

When a car is grey imported, the compliancer becomes the "manufacturer"... when I recently sold my V8, Vic Roads uses the "compliance date" as date of manufacture.

Well they'd be a silly bunch then wouldn't they?

Would it then be possible to misrepresent the car's year of manufacture if you wuz an unscrupulous vendor?
Or are there other safeguards in place?

I'd have thought that it wouldn't be TOO hard to have both date of manufacture AND date of compliance!

But then we're talking about a government that dosen't wanna make life easy for "Grey Imports".

Or......have I got the wrong end of the stick?
