Hey guys,

I'm having a very hard time trying to get the bottom bolt on of my struts off. I don't know if I'm just a weakling or what. The tie rod is in the way for using my breaker bar. Can't seem to get the tie rod on this side to come loose from the hub either to get the breaker bar in there. The other one came off pretty easy but no luck with this one.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get that thing to budge?

Can you jack it up higher and use the bar from underneath?

The tie rod should pop out if you beat the end of the steering arm on the hub assembly. Hit it dead on the end. Make sure the rod end joint still has the nut on it and you can't damage the thread.

A cheap puller should pop the joint out if that fails.

Matt.

Show us a photo.
And yes, you can buy a tie rod press tool for about 30 bucks I think. It looks like a little horseshoe with a bolt down the middle. You may want to test your other tie rod end if it came out that easy. You test them like ball joints - squeeze the shaft into the ball with a big pair of multi grips. And then use the old rule: "If there's play, throw it away". Anything more than about half a mm is bad. More is worse. You can also test them with the wheel on, but 16" multi grips are the way to go for ball joints and rod ends. I believe Super Cheap has a decent set of them and the tie rod press for the lowest bucks around.

Rod end tool:

Ball joint tool (they say you can use these on tie rod ends but I wouldn't):

Thanks for the tips.

:-) I got it yay. Once I got that loose the rest was easy, popped the upper arm off then out came the old strut in went the new put it all back together and its working great :-) I did get use a second hand air bag so I will check it out in the morning to see if there is a leak and if not its all sweet :-)

Miles I love your car list, if you ever want to give away that Camaro let me know haha :-)

I'm definately going to start stocking up on tools like that and put together a nice kit so I don't find myself in situations easily solved by a affordable tool.

The first tool Mike advised is a cracker (excuse the pun!) I bought mine from Ebay

The type of ball joint in that second link from Miles Diddn't work for me- I snapped one ($40)
