Hi Guys

I have recently bought a 2JZ31 1994 inline 6. My problem is that it is a very bumpy car...especially from the rear. Is this normal? Whenever I hit any type of bump in the road I can really feel it. The suspension also makes a squeek at the same time. The car has just been imported, complied and, I presume, blue slipped for rego. As I am completely broke, is there anything drastically wrong or is there something simple I an do myself? Anyone in Sydney who can take a look and/or advise me? The car is very much stock besides the wheels. Any comments/feedback/advice/help will be greatly appreciated because I am mechanically midget minded.

sounds like you may have aftermarket suspension which the previous owner has installed, they could be a hard setup which means you will feel everything in the road

Or maybe you stock suspension has packed it in

Thanks Steven,
Looks like a trip to the mechanic for me. Hope its aftermarket suspension. Can the setup be adjusted?

If they are aftermarket, pending on the coilover its self, whether it fully adjustable or not.

Thanks again Steven. Anything is possible with this car. Amazing things being discovered so far. Whilst removing centre console last night to replace stereo (factory stereo wasn't working) and check why gear shift lights weren't working, found that none of the plugs were in. Lazy previous owner (in Japan) had replaced his aftermarket head unit and when he reassembled the console hadn't bothered to put all the plugs back in except climate control. In fact, only 3 screws holding the bracket in.
In a way, I'm expecting anything under the car.

Certainly am Nathan. But the adventure is really worth it. I,m going to get the mechanic who does our company vehicles to check out the suspension and give me the good/bad oil on it. Once I know then I'll have to make decisions. There is a bad photo on my profile of the car. It wont take much for people to figure out where I work...haha.

I'd check your wheels mate. My car was driving really rough over the past few weeks. Last night, whilst driving to meet up with some friends, I blew a rear tyre at Carlingford. I didn't have the tool to loosen the nuts and my friend's tool was too big. Ended up driving 40 minutes back to my area to pick up the tool, then another 40 minute trip back to where I had left my car. Turns out I had a really crap wheel alignment. Damn Japanese owner didn't get a wheel alignment when he lowered it.

That is bad if it blew a tyre. But wouldn't I be feeling a shudder in the steering wheel from poor alignment? Or is that balance? The car is pretty smooth on the highway (170kph on the M4....well I had to test the car constable). Only on suburban (ie. bumpy) roads does it feel very exaggerated.
Just saw an ad for Pedders $14 28 point tyre and suspension test. Never used Pedders. Any thoughts anyone?

Iain, the Pedders test is pretty good. for $14 you can't really go wrong.

Work done will vary from store to store depending on the mechanic.

Faulty alignment will not cause shudder, only wear and handling effects. Shudder will most probably be balance, shocks or possibly bushes. Given the occasional nature of the shudder then it is near-certainly not balance.

Pedders will do a good job of shock testing, because you get a readout from a machine. After that, you are in the hands of the local franchise which is not much different from going to any other small business; could be good, could be bad. See what other people have to say about the one to which you go, or just take it to Niall.

The car started to shudder a lot after I tried launching the car a few weeks back. I had only stalled it to 2600 and I ended up getting a LOT of wheelspin (car even went sideways). I then heard something smack into the bottom of the car. Few weeks later, the tyre blew. After I took a look at the busted tyre, it was pretty obvious as to why the tyre blew. At the time of the launch I had stopped on some sharp rock-like object, hence the loud BANG underneath the car I heard when the car took off. Ever since that day, the car never felt the same til I replaced the tyre.
