i've heard that it is not a hard job, IF you have some idea what you're doing and have the right tools. you need all different sized shims to get them right as not all will need replacing. from what i've read, the ones closest to the firewall are the ones that play up.
mine ticks a bit. but i'm just planning to throw a big exhaust on it to drown it out. doesnt affect the performance of the engine, just sounds a bit ratty!

yeh i know what you mean, mate. i hate the way mine ticks. the car looks mint, it has an amazing presence - but you pull up to someone at the lights and the sound bouncing off their car just makes it sound like an asthmatic taxi. hence, straight through stainless 2.25" with X-pipe and mufflers.

Sorry I didn't get around to doing this.
It's not that bad of a job, You can do it with the Cam shafts still in but you need the shim removal tools to push the cam bucket down.
If you look on planet Soarer Peter Scott covers this really well.
I got a feeler gauge and tested the clearances between the shims and cam lobes, You need a workshop manual as this covers the procedure well.
There are certain tolerances you must have for intake and the exhausts, mine were all good accept for a rear exhaust shim which I replaced with the correct thickness (from Toyota ex Japan) on my last Soarer to stop the tick you could hear while passing parked cars.
Was quiet after that.
Check out the shim work on Planet Soarer it's good!

Yeah, i have done some more reading up and while it does look reasonably straight forward, i think it's the kind of job you would not attempt if you didn't have the right tools. i saw someone creat a makeshift tool for the shim removal, but the also need a very very accurate digital gauge, which if you didnt have would be quite expensive i'd imagine.....i'll watch this space though! looks like the same ones fail on most cars. passenger side bank, closest to firewall exhaust cam side.
