awesome price, still have to sell my existing setup to help pay the bill at some stage... would of liked to put it on the Cressida but one supercharged v8 will just have to be enough!

as for power... will have to see just how good the temps are out of the blower, 500rwhp / 400rwkw would be nice :-)

Woah, 400rwkw is huge power. Allan, how confident are you on your motor handling that power okay?
I hear the happy limit for a 91 1UZ is around 300rwkw. Any more and you may suffer engine failure.

These new-age blowers will be better with regards to your intake temperatures, no doubt than an M90 or M112 that you're currently using

What have you done to the gearbox too? What brand blower is it? adapter plate etc? Can we have some specifics?!

It's a Roush R2300 aka TVS2300 / HTV2300 2.3ltr/rev

I will be using an early 1UZ bottom end, see what happens $$$ wise may go rods, pistons and headwork as well, but there are a few examples getting around the 400 mark stock bottom end and I might not make that without an intercooler....

Nice :-)

Stock bottom end will be topping out about 350rwkw . Due to the compression and intake temps . E85 will help make more power And cool temps down though ;) then I think you could see 400 ... Maybe .

The heads can be ported to flow quite alot of cfm . But don't go too big with the cams as the blower rpm can be affected then .

Nice blower choice . Better to go bigger and flow easier to keep temps down , than screw it up high and cook them ! Intercooling would be great , but e85 will have similar effects :-)

Currently running the 160000km old a340, I will be running an a650, with the motec and trans controller I can do lots of trickery with shift cuts to keep the auto alive.

Looking forward to the results!

How will you shift through the gears manually if you aim to utilize that function?

On my car I've hooked up the cruise control stalk on the steering column in the factory position, just run some wires to it for the up and down triggers, albeit the TCM isn't looked up yet. Seems the soarers stock cruise stalk is equally as ideal, but it depends if you want to loose that function or not..

Oh and thanks again for the A650 base tune file you sent me last month, should be of great use with a few tweaks for my application.

no probs Mike, you managed to get another TCM2000?

I may end up getting a later Toyota wheel with paddles or make something up, but with a "RACE" and "normal" map in the TCU it should not need too much manual input...

Yeah finally, through one of their 'dealers' I mass emailed all of them, some emails bounced, a few replied, one was offering decent rates High-Impact Transmission & Gear it was.

That's a good point actually, I'll be interested to see the functionality of having switchable settings while on the go, I mean going from a normal shifting pattern to a more aggressive setup is sure to make for a better drive without manual intervention once dialed in correctly.

I suppose it will just take a bit of on the road tuning to get it right.

Pretty soon I'm going to give the TCM a go with the A341 thats in the car first off so I can learn from that and take what I learn when I install and setup the A650 - I'd rather make my mistakes with the A341 first! (I plan to scrap this box once its out of the car anyway)

the only issues with the 340 and 650 is they don't engage the clutch brakes on electronic downshifts like it does when you pull the leaver back so you get no engine braking, I need to look into modifying the valve body at some stage...

Are the A650E transmissions expensive and difficult to get hold of in Australia? I am aware they need fancy management (That aside) I am interested in how difficult one would be to procure.

I've read about that before, bit of a nuisance, I'll be interested to see how it feels on the road.. do you suppose the right valve body modification can help this issue?

Well everyone here in NZ is obsessed with the manual gearboxes so the autos are cheap as chips, I picked up two A650es for $150 each, both which look good inside - generally they are removed from import VVTi V8s with 100-150ks and removed for a manual box.

Must be a cheap source in Australia if you look around?

mike i'm sure it can be done, not sure how it will feel downshifting day-to-day might not be real smooth... but with a hi-stall and a beefy lock up clutch should be able to tune that out...

Lets not forget the TCM2000 is FULLY Programmable, it can work the gearbox like an ECU can work the engine and get the most out of it....

The stock gearbox controller is just typical Toyota, soft and economy minded, useless for a supercharged performance car!

Allan Langford wrote on Thursday, September 06, 2012 - 09:45 pm:

so you get no engine braking,

Coming back to this again, do you suppose this will this mean the gearbox will essentially freewheel at whatever speed the engine is running at..... well lets say for instance its downshifted from 3th to 2nd electronically, I imagine the RPMs would raise but there would be no assist with any engine braking... or would it be like it was in neutral/freewheeling until the accelerator is pressed?

I am really interested to see how this feels on the road.

I've always found the Toyota engine braking to be a bit jerky when used through L & 2nd. So perhaps no engine breaking through electronic shifts might not be such a bad thing.

I suppose the other side of it is does the engine compression have much effect when downshifting in the above circumstances.

Bahh, I need to get this tranny wired up, but of course I can't do that until the headers, fuel tank and front suspension are sorted.

correct as the sprag is a one way clutch it will just freewheel, rpm's will drop if your off the throttle. feels just like shifting into neutral! except if you get back on it hard you roll the sprag over and kill the trans.

Interesting Allan.

I read if the torque converter was locked during this period to would maintain the rpms giving an engine braking effect.

Only issue is the A341e can only lock 3-4th, although that I believe that is just with the stock ecu, surely the TCM can work around that through programming unless its a physical impossibility with the trans to engauge the TC lock in 1st or 2nd.

At a NA 1UZ power level I would assume it would be relatively safe to lock the TC, however given where the stress would be transferred to it's sure to wear out the stock clutch and brakes inside the box if kept locked on shifts and downshifts... but there are options for the upgraded 'blue' clutches.

..then it leave the option or necessity of getting a stronger built TC with upgraded clutches, higher stall and welded internals.

Hmmmmm

Even if the torque converter is locked and 2nd is electronicly selected the sprag is active so you have drive from the engine but that is it otherwise it's a box full of nothing! unless you can activate the clutch brake on the sprag as the trans does when you select 2nd manually

the stock TCC will burn out in short order if you try and lock it under anything but cruise loads.

a multi-plate TCC with a billet front cover for the torque converter would be ideal then you could have a 3000 or 4000rpm stall but only use it for 1st gear under "race" conditions and use it to split each gear under normal conditions.. ie 1st, 1st locked, 2nd, 2nd locked etc etc....

Sounds like your right.

I'm just trying to get my head around what is practical and achievable long term with these boxes.

I've finally come to realize the best setup for me will be to ditch the electronic remote shifting on the steering wheel and focus on using the console shifter for L, 2nd through to drive utilizing the mechanical shifting coupled with the electrical signals generated by the shift position selector on the gearbox.

At this point I gather this will give me the desired results with the TCM + shift kit.

I will leave the TCC out of the picture for the time being, clearly I'm over rating its effectiveness in a stock box!

Big rpm difference between a loose convertor in 2nd 3rd 4th compared to when they are locked .

My convertor is 4500 and light throttle rpm is normally between 2500-4000 rpm when lightly accelerating .

But locking it around town it uses a lot less rpm . As it feels like a manual .

I lock the convertor as soon as I shift 2nd and it stays locked for the 2-3 shift . So mine locks at full throttle no issues . It is a heavy duty slingshot unit .

Dragged that way for over 100 passes and hasn't killed the box yet :-)

Downloading when locked , I wouldn't recommend it's very unhappy I think ( may have accidentally happened once or twice ) .

I know Fred had a convertor in his blown Uz but the lockup was deactivated . His fuel economy suffered he reckons .
