I have done a timing belt on a commodore before... but am i in over my head if i attempt it on my soarer?... by the sounds of it, it sounds very tricky... so i'm considering taking it to a mechanic. Are there any tricks to it or should i be fine???

Kylie. Like Cihan says, unless you're ubber confidant with DOHC engines, then I would suggest taking it to an expert, or at the least knowledgeable friend who can advise you.

Thanks for the advice. I think the mechanic's will probably be best. I have access to tool's but i have heard that it's quite difficult on soarers which brought me to ask. This is one of the best car websites i have ever been to. It has almost everything you need to know on it and looks so organised!

First OHC engine I have done a belt on was the 1UZ. It's not that hard. Just take your time and you'll be fine. It's nowhere near the hardest thing to do on a car - you're just taking stuff off and putting it back on. Do you have a manual for the 1JZ?

I have only had the car for 4 weeks... haven't as yet got a manual. There are just a few things i would like to do to keep it happy. It should be due for the timing belt to be replaced - as it wasn't in the log books, it's in much need for a radiator flush and several other things. At least then i will be able to have peace of mind that it is happy. Thanks for your help... i really appreciate it.

i done mine, quite simple, just make sure you get the right parts as the belt i ordered through a spare parts place was wrong so i had the car off the road a couple of days till the right one came in. the hardest thing for mine was getting the harmonic balancer off as i swear the bolt was done up by giants! just need the tools to do it and a bit of knowledge of engines, just make sure you line the marks up at tdc. the actual hardest part was taking all the crap out to get to the timing belt eg piping, fan, radiator etc. it is so much easier if you have thermo fans! just check all the idlers while you are at that stage as the bearings could be on the way out and you might aswell do it while you are there!

I would try and do it yourself if you have the tools. It isn't that hard. And if you want one I have a brand new timing belt for sale for $50 It is off my spare engine.

Kylie, I consider doing it yourself. I have done it and its not that difficult. Do a search on the on the ALSC section, there is heaps of info and tips. You should seriously consider changing your water pump at the same time. Note, that toyota stock the o-rings for the interconnecting pipe now. I'll see if I can dig up my half completed procedure and email it to you. - Ooops - you have no email on your profile. If you's like it send me an email and i'll forward it. By the way, there were some others here who were going to complete the procedure after doing their own. What happened to you guys?????

i did use the starter, but my battery was on the way out! couldnt fit my 3/4" rattle gun in, hit on condensor and my snap-on rattle gun just wouldnt get it off! ended up getting couple of jumper packs onto it. BUT you can damage your starter doing this!!!! mine died bout a week later!

Sports & Luxury Cars - see the blue logo at the bottom of the page. No idea of their charges however, but you will want to get the water pump and the bearings changed while they doing the timing belt.

Its a full days labour, even for someone who knows what they are doing. Yes, don't skimp on parts or you'll end up paying for it all to come apart again somewhere down the line.
