Well after 3 attempts to seal my sump from weeping, i'm getting sick of being under my car covered in oil rather than in it..

I have scraped, cleaned and wiped with thinners each surface every time and still no luck. The oil return looks fine, it seems to be the pan it's self... Same story for the transmission...

I have used permatex ultra grey each time... Is this stuff just useless? or is it me....?

I'm prepared to give it one last crack, but if it doesn't work,i'm giving up and taking it to someone so it's their problem.

Please tell me what i'm doing wrong, it shouldn't be that hard to seal a sump ffs..

Hey Tai, I've had something similar happen.
When i bought mine, my tranny was leaking from around the Lower pan. Turns out someone used a cork gasket and overtightened the bolts so it warped the flange. Took it to the mechanic and he had to beat it back flat to straighten it out.

What do Toyota use from the factory? Find out and use some of that maybe? Otherwise, you could have warped to sump when you originally were trying to pry it out?

There's something called TripleBond or 3Bond that many people highly recommend.

I bought ThreeBond, not sure if it's the same but it's meant for the trans pan. Have yet to use it however.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I have been reading up and apparently I should give the toyota red stuff a go....

I made sure the pan was as flat as I could, and I have left the sealant cure for the recommended time (24hrs) before filling up..

I haven't heard of the threebond, I have used the loctite copper on my KTM..

Michael, I'd be silly not to take you up on your kind offer.. Which one do you think would be best suited to the engine and which one for the tranny.. I would be happy to send some money your way for your troubles.

Thanks again guys,

At work we use threebond on all metal to metal surfaces that require sealing and loctite 515 or 518 for seals/rubber, I work at a mitsi, holden, mazda dealership and all those car manufacters reccomend it and so do I so I'd give threebond a try if your willing to reseal it.

Recently had the same problem after fitting a shift kit, turned out the pan was slightly bent when removing it.
Are you just applying the sealant and then tightening it straight up or are you leaving loose for around an hour and then fully tightening it?
Also be careful not to use too much as if when tightening it up and it comes out the sides the same amount is going inside and can break away and float around the sump/pan and can possibly cause problems.

Could probably try Repco, or Holden Parts but would probably be a bit pricey from Holden.

It's going to toyota to be looked at on a hoist on thursday.....

One of the guys had a hard to fix leak, but turned out it was the speed sensor mount I think, so check if the leak could possibly be anything other than the pan seal.

Tai, I too have the identical problem. My mechanic has had the transmission sump off and tried to seal it but has actually made it worse. It's going back on Monday.
He thinks it is leaking from the selector shaft, but I got the car over a pit today and found no leak anywhere near that.
Like you, I'm getting a little p'd off.

As mentioned I had the same problem when fitting my shift kit, turned out the pan was very slightly bent from prying it off and leaked, just used a mallet to straighten it up and fixed the problem straight away. It might look straight but only needs to be out by a mm or so to leak. I used a high temp orange sealant (about $15.00).

Cheers guys..

I'll keep an eye out in those places when it's on the hoist... I think they are going to clean up the underside to find the exact leak point..

I think i'd be even more annoyed if it wasn't the pan and I have been trying to fix the wrong thing

With the pan off and all traces of gasket removed, offer the two metal surfaces up together, and then look around carefully for gaps - if they don't come together very nearly perfectly, then clearly something still isn't straight and its going to be hard for any gasket or sealent to fix.

yeh that gasket goo from toyota is designed to fill in gaps, ive used it to seal cork gaskets on a lc torana (showing my age) and it never leaked again, if you have another go find a piece of glass sit sump mounting face on it and sus any gaps , check to see if its cracked, then use a tin of contact cleaner or the like , and clean it all of spotlessly that toyota black stuff is good

Tai, Have you been replacing the "o" ring half way up the dip-stick tube, at the join, it could easily be coming from there and running down and appear to be coming from the sump.
