Would you get the same effect having:

1. Both headers join into 1x 4" cat converter (larger intake area than 2x 2.5 cats), then going out to twin mufflers,
OR
2. Headers going to 2 x 2.5" cats, then to X-pipe then out to twin mufflers?

Would either sound better? - looking for deep rumbley sound.

Any ideas?

3. headers to cats then straight out to mufflers.

1. and 2. will compromise the rumble a bit, more so with 1.

If you want rumble, A twin system with no interconnects is the best.
If you want power a single system is best.
And the X pipe is a good compromise.

Would #3 be too loud (louder than legal), or would you just need non-straight through mufflers?
I think every exhaust guy I've spoken to has recommended some sort of crossover to reduce noise and improve power.
I'm not really worried about extra power, just want a nice V8 noise.

Vaguely on-topic, years ago I went into this stuff when I had an International Scout, and I had gotten a set of extractors in from US. I had them connected to a new twin system, with an interconnect. I asked for it but the fitters approved. An "X" setup would have been better (better flow) but I didn't have the room (bloody great Dana diff in the way).

From memory a crossover helps share the load between mufflers as some of each pulse goes through the alternate muffler. I noticed a great improvement and a nice note (Inters had an odd firing pattern, too, apparently).

Just a question on cats:

Are catco 2.5" converters any good as far as flow is concerned?

What other cats are suitable for a dual system?

I've got headers, balancing pipe, twin cats and the rear set of mufflers.
It's got a nice (not loud) rumble. It's 80db @ 4000rpm which is 10db below the legal limit.

You could get it louder/deeper with a set of flutes but I like the sound as it is now.

I got standard headers into a high flow cat then out into two 2 1/4 inch pipes wiv no mufflers only the resignator.

I pulled 86dB at 3500rpm and when the back off it went to 94dB so i don't back off quick if i get a noise test lol

What's the difference between a muffler and a resonator?

Will installing rush headers increase fuel consumption for the same driving style?

Also, how much increase in power will the headers give?

Doing the headers or/and exhaust will help with better flow. Do your BFI too.
Once you have completed the mods get a uni chip and have it tuned to your car and you could save on normal style of driving, at lest till you put your foot down!

Anish, on their own, headers will give you a better exhaust "Flow", so ergo, they will provide better economy.

How does muffler length affect exhaust note?

Looking at a few Magnaflow cans. I'm after a deep v8 burble.

Personal experience only, is that the Magnaflow's sound a bit boingy compared to the Lukey's which have a nice solid dud-dud-dud type note on my car.

Peter, which type of Lukey and can you suggest a good place to source these cans?

Phoned a few places today. Was quoted around $220 each.

thanks.

Guys, what length is recommended for the cross pipes. Was talking to the guy that will be installing headers for me and he recons the smallest he can make them is 10" long using two bits of 40mm pipe.

Anish, X-pipes are also available off the shelf. I have read conflicting reports about their effectiveness for power increase. PlanetSoarer has an article demonstrating an increase in power. Someone else had their Soarer dyno'd before and after (in ALSC archives somewhere) and got no apparent increase.

What is agreed however, is that an X-pipe will make the car a little quieter as it allows the pulses to mingle at the joint and smooths them out.

For me, not having an X-pipe is good. I don't have headers, so am not able to achieve maximum power increase from the exhaust, so I settle for terrific burble instead. Yet to hear a V8 that sounds better :-)

Add to that, without headers or X-pipe, my UZZ30 still managed 149.7rwkw at the recent dyno day in Adelaide :-)
