I have a problem with the fuel filler. I've read the past posts but not sure of this is the same problem or not. Whenever I fill up to the top (I stop filling up the first time the pump cuts out) it seems to overfill and spill out through the actual hole with the flap. Not straight away but after a few minutes or a short drive. If you look at the picture you'll know what I mean, perhaps it's also spilling out through the seal as well, but it's not meant to be coming back up through the actual hole is it? All the other cars I've had I could continue to fill up even if the pump cuts out 5 or 6 times, here as soon as it cuts out, i cant fill up anymore, and after a minute it starts coming back out. Will the usual fuel filler fix-up stop it all together or is there anything else wrong with it? I would have thought even sealing the edge won't prevent the fuel coming back through the hole, can't see the logic anyway. Thanks for any help guys!

i can see how after the first cut out your are getting fuel back up the pipe, my fuel only comes out when i really swing the back end around, toyota sold me the wong petrol cap and want change as i have lost the cap. i only had something simliar like that happen to me once when i did the drive from brisbane to cairns i put as much fuel as the car would take a bit to much and it came pour back out but never did that again but i di go 7-9 cut off after the first one and shaked the car between every cut off.
Well, the fuel spills out and runs down the rear quarter panel making a mess. So Brian, by saying swing the back end around u mean like driving hard or something? What do u mean? What will shaking the car do? Yeah I just checked the insert Dan, it is a bit loose coz the seal is cracked up in many places, so i will have to fix it sometime soon. But I still don't see how that will be related to the fuel coming back up the pipe. What vent do I check? On the actual cap or something? I put my finger on the little flap thingy to bend it back. Is it meant to actually seal the hole tight when it is closed? I don't think mine does. I might put some silicon around the seal for now see if that helps. Another thing which i find annoying too is that when the car is full of fuel, or even 3/4 full, and i happen to park sideways on an incline with the fuel filler sitting lower, fuel literally pours out of the hole with the flap. Grrrrr, now that shouldn't happen didn't happen in my AU Fairmont at least...

DON'T put silicone in a fuel system.
The little flap does not seal, it's mainly a splash guard.
The fuel could be coming out of the insert if it's loose. Otherwise I think there is some kind of seal on the cap, check that.
The vent, you will see if you open the boot and pull the cover at the front of the boot back, is a small line that runs above the filler. If this is blocked it could cause the tank to slightly pressurize and then try to release the pressure by blowing back out the filler.
I'd whack up some pics but I'm 200 k's away from my car at the mo.

that reminds me of chasing Mark Ribbans around Mallala. He had a dodgy petrol cap and every left hand bend he was dumping gallons of fuel in my face! Needless to say I didn't stay to close until I had a chance to pass him on the straight
Ok, that explains things then, I gotta check it out tonight then. I'll check the venting first (I'll try to figure which part it is heheheh), and then gotta seal the insert. So that will basically get rid of all problems right. I'm guessing that when the car is on an angle the fuel then comes out through the insert rather than the cap. Cool, will get it sorted then. Thanks for your help!

sorry i did me driving hard, shaking the car helps release air bubbles in the top of the tank.
On mine i had to take that flappy part the splash guard out and put sealent (radiator and petrol tank cement) as it had none and replace my fuel cap. does anyone know where i can get a soarer petrol cap from or trial and error.

I had the same problem, turned out to be the fuel restrictor ( fitted at compliance ) had come loose. You can get some fuel tank repair putty which set like a rock. You have to pull the restrictor out, clean away all the old sealant and then re-seal with fuel tank repair putty and re-fit.. Im sure there is a post somewhere on how to do this step by step.. Or you can try replacing the fuel cap seal ( which have also been known to give problems ) part n.o. 77316-16010

If you lift the boot lid , pull out the liner ( at the back of the boot) , you'll see a short piece of rubber hose , between two steel fuel return pipes. Put hose clamps on these. Now get a 10mm socket and carefully tighten the 10 bolts that hold the filler neck onto the fuel tank. If the fuel is getting past the insert at the top ,after you've fitted a new cap , then get the insert welded in. Mine cost $120.00 , to weld , but no more nasty fuel loss's while on the race track. You can get a standard cap from Super cheap , remember it's got to fit the insert , which is a standard thread type unit. Having done all of the above on my car , NO more fuel smells , EVER.

Im arranging to get an un-compliance-bodged filler neck from a half-cut... i should also point out that the restrictor on mine has also been welded/brazed in and there are clamps on the hose and i *still* get the smell

ANyone have a jap fuel cap if its in fact bigger? i wouldnt mind using that instead s i dont have a restrictor. I cut about half a centimeter of thread off mine so it screws in deeper.
