I just bought a new plastic thermostat housing for my v8 off the internet and it came with a gaskit. The housing already on my car didn't have a gaskit on it. It seems that the new gaskit isn't a perfect fit and the gaskit is a little big on the inside on one side, it protrudes about 3mm inside on one side, as such the coolant will run over the gaskit as it circulates in the cooling system.

Should i put this gaskit on or just leave it off as the old one didn't have one. I'm worried the gaskit will get wet, and then perhaps soggy and some of it might end up circulating around the cooling system.

Thanks in advance!

Its been a while since I have taken my V8 one out but i'm assuming its similar to a TT one & they seal by the rubber ring around the outside of the thermostat & no gasket is used, does the new thermostat housing look exactly the same as the old one ? & if so just fit it without the gasket supplied, ( not a bad idea to replace the rubber seal on the thermostat though )

Personally I reckon its best for a lot of these things to go genuine Toyota, not some Chinese copies

gasket!! not gaskit

also as robert mentioned it looks more like its meant to be an o-ring that does the sealing and not a paper gasket. (hence why there was no gasket)

i'd be a bit wary about using a paper gasket, i'd even make sure they're actually the same housings

It's not the rubber seal, it's part 16321 the plastic housing, the part came with a thin paper gasket i could put on with that part.

I ended up taking the gasket off before i refilled with water, i thought it would be best. Hopefully it seals. I should have bought a proper toyota one but i bought a new alternator too so just got it all from the same website. Looks exactly the same except the plug on the alternator was the wrong type. Ah well hopefully i can find somewhere open today that can sell me the adaptor

no seal is just begging for leaks,

at the very least you should have gotten some silicon gasket stuff from super cheap auto or repco etc and used that.

i'd keep a very close eye on it, especially once the car heats up and there's some pressure in the system

We all understood which part it was that you bought & where the gasket they supplied should go, its fine that you took the gasket off so long as you left the rubber seal still on the thermostat itself ..

Yes i left the rubber seal on the thermostat. It seems there is a very slight leak from under the part i fitted. I will try get some of that silicon gasket stuff and put it on.

Thankyou all very much for your help it's been great. This forum is awesome :-)

Just get 3 bond or go into Toyota and buy there silicon they use on these engine , cost about $38 but good stuff , the black or grey 3 bond is just as good I think , that's all I use on the engine and auto .

Just buy a new seal ( part # 16325 ) that goes around the thermostat as that is what does the sealing for the housing too & will fix the leak so long as the new plastic front cover you bought is straight & not warped, unless you know how little silastic to use it could have bits left on the inside which can come adrift & go through the cooling system, not ideal ...

Today I noticed as I was rotating the crank little bits of water was dripping from the thermostat housing. Have the mechanics forgotten this seal or some other issue (just completed major service and new aftermarket thermostat went in).
