I'm going to drive up to Surfers Paradise very soon and my soarer (v8 Ltd) has about 110,000km on it. I haven't changed the timing belt or water pump yet but will be doing about 2500km in total for the trip, does anyone know if the timing belt/water pump will be okay and not blow up. There seems to be no cracks on the timing belt when i checked.

although hard to predict, i'd be pretty confident with it mate. My mates v8 is up to 130 or so and that slack prick hasnt done his yet... no dramas.

Especially if you have checked it and its not obviously stuffed (cracks, frays etc)

Even IF the timing belt broke, it's no biggy coz the 91 V8's are a NON-interference design, so nothing'll get bent, the donk will just stop.

My water pump blew up last summer, I was driving on a hot day about 70km in total, and when i came next day to get my car from the carpark the rusty water was everywhere arround the car.

And at the time ODO was reading about 96000km.

So it's your decision what to do...

although v8's are non-interference if your water pump goes and your belt jumps a tooth your stuffed. Apparently this happened to a previous owner of one of my soarers. Cost him a to replace the whole engine. They don't say change it at 100 thou for no reason....

Everything is usually designed with safe operating perameters. If Toyota say the belt is safe for 100,000 then I bet it's good for 150,000. There's probably plenty of tales of woe out there about short lifed belts - but this is a Lexus/Toyota. I bet they tested plenty of rubber compounds before they made these belts so I'll keep driving for a few more thousand K's yet.

I still haven't changed the timing belt or water pump yet and my soarer just done over 130,000km.

The mechanic at S&LC checked the timing belt at 100,000km and he said the belt is still in good condition and it will last up to 160,000km...

Neil tells me that it's ONLY the later V8 Soarers which have a belt change at 160,000kms, 92 on, I think, due to a higher Nitrile content belt composition.
Where as the 91 - 92(ish) V8's should be changed at the usual 100,000kms.
BUT that's not to say that if ya Soarer has already had it's belt done either before, or during your ownership it may well have the later type belt fitted.

The Toyota EPC lists one belt for 91 - 92 & another for 92 - 1997.

Don said...
I'd be very careful taking that as gospel (sorry Don) because it could cost you an engine to find out.
A s/h engine will cost a lot less than a rebuild.

Neil........Buggar! I thought I was doing so well , at least I got the high Nitrile part right

Dave, no need to apologise.
I agree completely.
I would rather check the belt to be on the safe side, and IF it's looking even slightly dodgy, why take the risk. And the fact that the early ones are a non-interference design ain't gonna help you much if you get stuck in the middle of no where at 11 o'clock at night. Fine if you're just poofling round the burbs, but a pain in the posterior if you're undertaking a 1000km plus journey.

Don, if I ever get through I'll make sure you hear the shout of glee all the way down there.
( I need a booster pump motor for the ABS/TRC if anyone has one or knows where there is one).
