Gases will chose the path of least restriction, if there is a blockage in one of the mufflers or cats etc, that whole section of the exhaust pipe will presurise to a point and exhaust gasses will push out of the unblocked side.
A quick way to check for blocked mufflers is using a laser pointer! A night, shine the laser into the exhaust and you can see everything thats happening.. The gas lights up nicely, so you can check if one side is breathing better than the other without waiting for a cold morning!

couldnt tell on the manifold. I am wondering if there is anything in either bank of the engine that would cause excess heat on one side in comparison to the other, eg more unburnt fuel etc... both sides have strong smell and carbon build up

i had the mufflers off the other day, gas comes out both sides, i managed to get a lenght of hose up the same distance on both sides (as far as the start of the resonators) no blockage down there. cats have "no blockage"

In that case, it is most likely an unburnt fuel scenario. Leaky injector/s or weak spark to a cylinder. If its idling fine etc, id think its an injector issue lifting the EGT of one bank up.
Regarding the cat. converter, sometimes the honeycomb weave gets squashed up and becomes a partially solid block of metal.. has happened on my friends lowered commodore.

One cat more blocked than the other so it comes down to path of least resistance. If you want to be sure try and get a heat gun (buy/hire/borrow) and point it at the exhaust from each cylinder. Shouldn't be too much difference between them if all's working as it should.

I will check spark plugs for build up. I probably should get new leads. its running fine though. Whats EGT Cihan? and how would i remedy this injector issue? I have always had above average fuel consumption.

So it all mixes at the X-pipe. Theoretically the problem (if it is one) is happening after that. If one bank was running hot, the mixing at the X-pipe would mean the same stuff still goes out both pipes at the rear.

hmmmm, to what extent would it mix though. not much past the x pipe! would a chunk of cat broken off and lodged in the resonators make a big difference?

Avin, depending of the design of the X-pipe, possibly a hot right hand bank could cause a hot left hand exhaust. Probably feeling along the pipe will give you the best clue.

AVin; if there is a piece of cat in there it will rattle a bit. with the X pipe in there it is very hard to determine what bank of the engine is running hotter than the other so now you have repaired the cats and then comes the X pipe and if you have not noticed any rattle of lack of power any more since fixing the cats then don't worry mate

the rattling has well and truly gone, I did have a piece of the old cat lodged pretty tight in one bit just before the muffler. hard enough to not make any noise. A tap with a screw driver broke it to pieces and it then blew out once i started her up.
So if it pulls a decent figure on the dyno then dont wory about it?

Sorry mate, EGT stands for exhaust gas temperature. It rises unnaturally if unburnt fuel passes through when the exhaust valves open, it also rises with ignition retard.
** Probably bits of cat. converter lodged in the resonator restricting one side a little as suggested. U'll find out on dyno day i suppose
