Was there a guy in an S2000 at this khana? And is that contruction work I see beginning for the new burnout pad and drag strip??? Only 5 years waiting...

PS I timed you at 1:24

He was there, but he was running a civic last time out. Can drive. I like watching him in that 2ooo- he knows it very well and is pretty damn fluid on those tight little tracks.

When did you clock me at 1:24? The missus thought I did one but she was hand timing with the two boys running around. And why don't you say hello? Am I that ugly?

As for the drag strip- the work has not yet started. Laurie is still talking to 'people' to make sure when the work finally starts the entire complex is not rendered useless to the club.

do you have any problems with your power steering during khanas?

Every now and then I feel it cavitate. Feels like the wheels take an extra beat to catch up to the steering wheel when you have a couple of lock to lock changes in a row. No issues at the end of a run. I was thinking it may have been my cooler being a little restrictive. No such dramas on the track.

I am stumped. The only way forward from here is either a larger cooler core (I have a 10 row) or have another look at the ducting. I am wondering if the air is not getting out the back of the core for some reason. Maybe I'll try running some ducting from the cooler out to the side of the wheel arch with the aim of using the low pressure on the side of the car to 'suck' air through the cooler.

You probably need a larger oil cooler. I had the same issues until I bought a 28 row Earls cooler.

Regarding the upper arms, the Ikeya Formula have serrations on the mating surfaces which also transfer the load apart from the 4 bolts. The bolts are high tensile and the forces are in shear whereas the Just Jap arms have a bending moment on the rod end. The upper arms have to react to the braking forces so while the stock arms don't look that beefy, consider the major forces are in a horizontal plane and they have a lot of material where it counts. With the Just Jap ones, when you brake the steering upright is trying to bend the rod end forward and after enough time it might succeed.

I know this probably sounds like any other forum paranoia, but when you're doing track work you have to consider the risks and what your life is worth (I'm quite serious about that last point).

Just looking out for ya :-)

You could also look at using a oil to water cooler that screws on between the oil filter and its mounting location. ie screws on as the oil filter would but then allows you to screw the oil filter on as per normal just sticking out a bit more.

Subie's use them from factory and run the engine coolant through them.

I think I'll get a new larger core. I have always been worried about generic coolers ability to flow enough to support the high oil pressure the JZ's run.

There is loads of useable space there since the powersteer cooler was removed and replaced on the other side.

Arms....some one might have a set to sell sooner or later.

TRD Oil to water cooler available for 1JZ and 2JZ.

They are supposed to be the most efficient type of oil cooler even though they are small in size.

I'll have to check, but I thought my 1JZ already had one factory fitted.

I vaguely remember a guy on Toymods removing his for some extra clearance (or some other reason) when he did a 1J swap into something.

I just checked the EPC: there is in fact an oil cooler assembly that looks just like that on the side of the motor.

No worries, I didn't think they had them from factory.

I guess the TRD cooler is larger but probably not worth the cost compared with a larger oil to air cooler.

The only option as per above is more airflow or larger cooler. Given the work on ducting airflow should be ok so bigger cooler.

As part of the shed clean out for the move I decided to remove the side quarterglass windows and replace them with lexan. Yeah, I'm not sure how the missus is gonna take that when she finds out tomorrow...

After several hours with wire, knives and heat gun the windows came out in one piece. They are really stuck in there. I traced around the window and cut the lexan with a jigsaw. I decided to use flanged rivets to secure the window as well as running a bead ow window sealer. One side is in, and the other needs to be installed tomorrow. I'll post pics tomorrow night. (after I clean out the shed)

Be bloody careful cleaning the lexan, it scratches SUPER easy.

Have a look at some stuff called Plexus, It's a really good plastic cleaner will fillers in it to fill and cover any minute scratches. (it doesn't fill big ones, though)

The door glass was a saving of 3.1kg each, and the quarter glass was 1kg each. I guess that is a total of 8.2kg in glass, but there are other things as well. The quarter glass window surrounds were 600g each and I haven't put them back on. I removed the window mech from the passenger door (1kg I think) so on and so forth.

It might not seem like much, but 10kg up high in the car should make a difference. Also, 10 lots of 10kg is a hundred...

Ali, I've lost track of the maths, so when I find a weigh bridge I'll put it on and get a new 'zero'. It must be somewhere around 1420-1430kg by now. It was 1395, added 60kg with cage and stripped maybe 20-30kg back out again.

Yes Paul, Andrew and I are part of a secret Soarer racing hermit society. I have fired up the Telstra mobile stick so we have the net. I doubt we will set up any permanent phone or internet as we are heading south at the end of the year. We packed up today, and move in to the next place tomorrow. The good news is we are even closer to the track and the Kruinstiver brothers (run rotary IPRA cars up here) are right across the street...

Settled into the new (our old?) house (again). I pulled the track car out of storage and it is once again up on jacks for a freshen up inbetween doing mods on the house.

We have an unscheduled 'drift and drive' day at Hidden Valley this weekend. The track was supposed to be closed for the rest of the year for work on the dragstrip, but like all Government projects it is well behind schedule. Hopefully they don't start until January.

My right front tyre is now almost a full slick, and the left is not much better. The right side does all the work at the valley and it shows. I am getting the 'good' tyres pulled off the damaged supra rims and throwing them on. The last test session I had some bad understeer, and the tyres are grained up like crazy. I am hoping that fresher rubber on the front with my weight saving should see me under 1:25.1 this weekend.

Fresh oil, brake fluids etc should help. I also need to track down a new filter element as the old HKS powerflow one fell apart. I might have to pay autobarn retail...OMG! No idea who else in town might sell the elements. I have a piece of T shirt stretched over the mesh at the moment.

PS: anyone see the Time Attack Soarer in HPI this month? I reckon I might have to send them an email of my POS to show there are a few of us here in Australia doing it to.

Our NAMSC Hidden Valley event for today was cancelled due to lack of numbers, however one of the IP guys hired it for testing and let those who had entered join his session. Hooray for Wayne! So we had a very relaxed test afternoon with only a handful of cars and drifters in 20 minute sessions.

I ended up using petrol filter foam from the rubber place to make my own filter element. It must have worked because as the afternoon progressed making a change, doing 3 laps, making another change and so on I beat my PB again and again.

I am now firmly in the 1:24 bracket, with a new PB of 1:24.2, nearly a whole second faster. What makes this even better is the track is a construction site so there is dust and crap everywhere. It was kinda slippery to start with...

Hey mate. I would recommend the NAMSC website, but I'm not sure it has actually been updated this year. I got myself on the email list when I joined NAMSC and so get notified by email or word of mouth for 'private' tests.

This weekend was supposed to be a proper event but they only got 8 official entries. More than eight cars turned up though, which goes to show you need to enter by the cutoff to ensure the event goes ahead.

There should be something mid Sept and they hope to give more notice, but it is dependant on the construction work.

It took some getting used to. The handling was all 'wrong' after the cage went in. Clearly it is a lot stiffer now, and I am figuring it out. I'd love to have a crack on fresh rubber, and I'd love to go back to Wakefield and see what time it would do now.

I have been emailing a guy in the US. He has told me he hasn't had any R2 camber kits (offset bushes) in stock for a very long time. He has access to a set of the R2 offset bushes for SC300/400/Supra and is getting them copied by another US company, Powerflex. With any luck I could have a set of them in the country inside two months to fit to the track car.

I have mentioned that there are a couple of guys who would be interested in them down here as well. We'll see how it goes.

I guess it worked then Peter. I saw you post in another thread and followed the links.

Phil- If I can get a set out here, and it looks promising, then we should be able to get more. I have no idea on the pricing, but there should be some savings in freight/postage if a couple of guys wanted to order some after we find out how they go. He might even do a group buy. I guess it depends on demand in his local (US) market.

Just playing devil's advocate, but can the offset bushes be locked in position? If the original design doesn't then he should be able to add it into the new design. Worth asking at least.

Just playing devil's advocate, but can the offset bushes be locked in position? If the original design doesn't then he should be able to add it into the new design. Worth asking at least.

From the pictures of the Daizen and R2 kits they seem to work in a similar fashion to the camber adjusters on the LCAs. They have been used to correct camber from excessively lowered SC300/400's in the US for over 10 years. The blurb states you can position them to adjust camber 2deg, or 1 deg camber and raise the arm as well.

When he gets back to me with some details I'll go from there.

The balance sheet clearly shows where I've been. I'm closer to $20000 now I reckon. I'll have to pull it out and update the figures and find out.

Nice - should be a very cost effective option.

I guess I don't know until I see them. Even if I simply set them to 1 or 2 degrees and then leave them alone and just use the stock camber adjustment to do all the fine adjustment. It should effectively move the factory adjustment range 2 degrees to the left.

I want to get them out here now simply because I have chased them for close to two years. In the back of my mind I am actually thinking I should 'future proof' the car and just buy the best gear now(Ikeya/JIC). I spent two grand on brand new JZA 80 brakes, but part of me wonders if I shouldn't have waited another year and spent $3-4000 on one of the recognised race brake setups like Brembo/alcon/etc.

I just updated my track car budget spreadsheet.

Including the purchase price of the car and trailer I have just clocked over the 20 grand mark, with $20,051. That includes brake pads, tyres etc but only includes the initial dumping of all the fluids and replacement, not subsequent oil changes.

Major expenses are the brakes ($2000), Cage ($2000), and clutch ($800). If you take the $4000 purchase price of the car, and the nearly $4000 for the trailer and rego, then I have spent $12,000 modifying the car.

To put that into perspective. I think a pack of cigarettes costs $15 odd. A pack a day smoker would spend at least $5475 per year. In the two years I have owned the track car, the smoker would have spent nearly $11,000. He also would have had to entertain himself for the thousands of hours I have spent working on it. Not to mention he is going to die soon.

I think it was $12,000 well spent. You reading this Mrs Lipman?

No need to spend loads on brakes - I can supply you with the brackets to bolt on the 355mm FPV Brembos which you can get off ebay.

But overall I think you've done exceedingly well even if you'd spent double. Not to mention the satisfaction & enjoyment which you can never put a price on.

Cheers Damien.

I am not saying the Supra brakes are not great bang for buck, or indeed the FPR Brembo option. I was merely daydreaming about whether, with the benefit of hindsight, I shouldn't have saved longer and purchased a dedicated race car package with none of the compromises required for OEM equipment on a road car. Of course that would have meant bigger wheels and new semi slicks to fit. And then you'd have to consider if the master was up to the task, and why not fit a 'proper' pedal box and brake proportioning system while I'm at it. Ohh crap my brakes just cost me 12 grand.

I think next year will be characterised by a couple of big spends. Either fibreglass panels, or a GT3076r conversion.

In the meantime I went out to the car today and started to remove the rear screen. What a prick of a job. Halfway through I quit in a puddle of sweat. (remember what sweat is, you southerners? Nice and warm up here)

Might resume the task over a bourbon or two tomorrow night.

Hey Ben,

I'll give you a text/call tomorrow. Was thinking, check out your car, partake in a beverage, sounds good.

Talk to you then.

Cheers,

Nath.

Are you running out of brakes??

No??

Then the supra ones are fine. :-)

Nice work on the car, and that vid is really cool, with some good footage of the car.

I really need to make time to get to the track.

I'm probably keen on one or two sets of the bushes as well.
