Dan- I'm running out of power, LOL. Point was something 'like do it once do it right'. The brakes was only an example. I could say the same about the HSD coilovers too.
You should get to the track. Dollar for dollar it is more fun, less dangerous and costs about the same as a night out on the piss. Plus, if you pick up at a pub, meh. But if you pick up at a a track day, you legend!

Nath- should be able to sort something out. Was supposed to have some work on, but it is being covered.

Spent tonight getting the rear glass out and tracing it onto the Lexan. Should get it cut out and test fitted tomorrow. I am just having a look at what else could/should be done with the glass out and the boot off.

Hey Ben,

What are you up to tomorrow? I'll give you a call around 1030 if that suits.

Yeah, the old girl is pretty lively. I might bring it around if you live not far from me.

Talk to you then Mate,

Cheers.

I cut out the lexan rear window this morning. I weighed the rear glass (8.1kg) and the lexan (3.4kg) so I'll save 4.7kg from the glass alone, plus the combined weight of all the adhesive (there was a lot!) and some of the garnish. Whilst the screen was out I had as look at the rear shelf and decided it needed a coat of black. Before I did that I figured there was some wiring and controllers that I no longer needed. So I commenced removing them, and noticed some brackets. I stopped with the wiring and grabbed a cold chisel to remove the brackets. This is why cars consume so much time.

Any way it was around this time Nathan turned up with cold beer. A decision was made to stop working on cars, and start talking about working on cars.

At the end of the day, I have removed some more wiring, painted the inside rear of the car gloss black, and painted a black margin around the replacement Lexan rear screen. Tomorrow I should finish one, if not all, of the tasks started today.

Will you run some bracing behind the lexan Nascar syle to stop it drumming?

Dan McColl wrote on Thursday, August 19, 2010 - 09:25 pm:

Are you running out of brakes??

No??

Then the supra ones are fine.

It's not about running out of brakes (fade) but you can get on the brakes later and harder with the FPV brembos. I've gone from Celsior to F40/330mm to F50/355mm and with each change have felt the difference and have moved my braking points back.

Master cylinder is fine for the F50 front/Supra rears.

I was looking at that yesterday. I think I will see how it goes. I used a windscreen adhesive along with flanged rivets (and load spreading washers) to secure it. Due to the curve there is little flex in the window just by pressing on it. I have had the door and side 'glass' in for two test events now and there has been no noticeable issues (the drivers side is still electric so is only held in by the rails and the rubber lip along the top of the door).

The rear screen is a much larger surface area, but plenty of drag cars seem to make it work with out bracing and they are hitting higher speeds.

If I have to fit the bracing I will, but it will be a pain in the arse as I'll have to cut the sealant again and start from scratch.

*edit*
I just realised I never followed up saturdays efforts. I have the rear screen in, the back seat area de-wired, de-bracketed and painted. I just need to get the boot and rear wing back on the car. Then I'll get it down to the weighbridge to see where I stand.

You can also try higher friction pads which have the greatest effect on braking HP.

There are some very high friction race pads which also work from much lower temperatures suitable for sprints or where limited warm up is required, they have somewhat recently become available roughly 0.7u with 100 to 800 deg operating temps.

Ben, Damien I have read some very good reports on the new EBC bluestuff. Whilst my experience with EBC pads was a dissapointment supposedly there latest products have improved considerably.

I think we are getting lost and off topic guy's Ben simply stated that he is a do it once do it right person and that the supra brakes was just an example that given the funds a more race orientated package would have been bought.

Lets move on.

Yeah, I would, but that would mean being home during daylight hours. I want to put the boot back on tomorrow and take it to the weighbridge. I'll get some pics then.

Funnily enough it looks just like a very clear version of the factory glass. No lines, no tint. It isn't until you look closely that it becomes noticeable.

I put the boot back on the car today, but not before I drilled it full of holes with a couple of holes saws. All this effort saved me about 500g, so I would recommend against wasting the time.

I took pics, but the card won't read at the moment so they'll be posted later.

I also took the car over the weigh bridge on the way to the port facility. It is used to weigh road trains, so I am not sure as to its accuracy. Anyway, the car weighs 1.42 tonnes according to the weighbridge screen. The receipt printer was out of service.

So 1420kg with 25L fuel on board. I was hoping for something more like 1400kg flat or less. At least I now know what it weighs.

I have gone off doing a flat underbody as it is illegal in a lot of categories. Probably OK for time attack.

I am avoiding doing anything I will have to undo later on, as I haven't come up with a clear direction for the car. Sports sedan, time attack, maybe even IPRA now is on the cards. Until then it is my track hack.

The tip is where I weighed it last time. Judging by the difference when I got out of the car, it was pretty accurate (to within a couple of kg at least).

I don't think our tip up here has a weighbridge. I haven't seen it, anyway.

The SD card is playing the game today, so here are the pics of the lexan rear screen (very dirty!):

And the result of me going mad with the holesaw.

*OK, for some reason the small photos from my camera (680xwhatever) that I have been attaching to posts here for years are now being rejected as being too big. So imagine the rear of the car has a very clear screen, and the inside of the bootlid is full of holes.*

Yeah. I know. It all depends on what is going on in Adelaide. I am planning on hanging around there for 4-5 years if we like it. Good employment opportunities for the missus etc.

With my limited understanding of both Sports sedan and Time attack rules as long as I conform to the stricter of the two (generally Sports sedans) the car should be OK for both. This is the reason I have passed over a couple of opportunities to buy vented bonnets and the like. I know you can fit vents to sports sedan bonnets, but they are nowhere as aggressive as allowed in TA.

Lew was going to sell me his fibreglass guards, but has faded away, probably with his hectic work schedule. Truth is they can probably wait until the end of the year anyway. Saves me carrying them to Adelaide. Sama sama one of your bonnets. (I mean I need to get the little fatso under 1400kg again!)

There is a lapsprint day at the Valley on 19th September. $77 for non NAMSC members. I will either be there with the car, or helping out (I have both boys for parenting duties that day and cant leave them alone in the pits).

I can forward the email with entry forms and regs if anyone is interested, alternatively they should be on the NAMSC website.

Paul- that site appears to have stalled mid 2009. I will search around for the time attack scene in Adelaide as I am told it is well organised and popular.

Was bored through the week, and made up a new video full of footage I had from the last two years. All the stuff I think is cool, including some off track excursions, one of which nearly took out Jeff and Manny at Wakey...

Unreal Ben!!

I like how you can throw something like this together when your bored. It would take me a dedicated week to do the same.

Regarding the lapsprint day, I would be up for coming down to watch or do some filming.

My car isn't up for track work just yet unfortunately. Have an appointment with the accountant on the 20th to do my tax, so by mid next month I should be good to go!

Knowing my luck, there wont be anything else for months after this.

Are you heading down to the motorkhana this Sunday?

Cheers.

Yeah Motorkhana this Sunday. I just took the cars out into the rain and washed them. Lucky waterproofness is not a race car must have. I had to chamois the inside out after that downpour. One day I'll pull the perspex sunroof out and replace it with some sheet metal and seal it up good and proper.

As for the video, I just use window movie maker. I know it aint the greatest bit of kit out there, but it is pretty easy to use. I just find a bit of music I like and then cut pics and video into it. I just wanted to put some of the off track stuff into something.

I am considering doing a drift day just to get some different style of footage as some of the motorkhana stuff looks cool, but has crappy background etc.

What I really need is someone else with an incar camera to tail gate me around the track.

Wow, been a long time.

I went down the track today for a 'private test day'. There were about 10 cars there and as many drifters as well. Essentially we just took it in turns having half an hour on the track, or until one group lost interest, or later on, broke bits.

I managed to get close to my PB running a 1:24.3 lap, but on an inspection between sessions I noticed my wing mount was broken again. After some running around it became obvious I wasn't going to be able to fix it (my spare was for the other side).

I decided to take it out and see what times I could run with no rear wing. First lap it felt like I was going every bit as fast as my best, however I was very dismayed to discover I was nearly three seconds a lap slower. I put my head down and after some sphincter clenching laps I managed to run a couple of 1:26.2s back to back.

So if any one states smugly the rear wing probably does bugger all and is just there because I am a closet ricer, I can honestly answer it is worth 2 seconds a lap, almost as much as the semi slicks (allegedly).

I can also tell you that the cars wobbles all over the main straight at 200kph without the rear wing, and even through 80kph corners was a serious power oversteerer.

So much so that when I got home this arvo I made up a set of replacement brackets out of galvanised steel. They weigh a bit, but I have now broken four wing mounts of two designs (including the original part.)

I sat and stared at the car over a calming coffee and contemplated an end plate mounted wing design, but am struggling to see how to make it work. The rear of the Soarer is quite round, so the last reasonably flat surface out side the boot is quite a distance forwards of the rear of the car. There isn't a lot of realestate to work with there either.

Time to google the sports sedans and time attack cars for some ideas.

Hey Mate,

Wow, maybe we shouldn't have given it so much attention or maybe the 5mm or so we (you) added was too much?? (If so that is impressive! I would believe it though.)

I was thinking perhaps you could make up a template to measure the angle of the wing and if you were really keen setup a camera to capture a wool yarn test. That would be the go! Study boundary layers, separation points and the like Ng-hey, sheboygan!!

Wh-what?

There is a thread on here where someone did some wool tuft testing on the body (no whopping big GT wing)

The air flow was pretty good except the rear bar area. I have messed with that somewhat, and would be interested in seeing how air flows in that area.

What I found interesting was the fact I was only 1kph faster into the turn one braking area, despite the fact that there was less weight and drag with no wing. I believe it was due to the speed I lost coming onto the straight with no wing. I was braking at the same point, but it was 'interesting' trying to keep it straight.

With the wing mounts, I reckon it has to be metal fatigue due to vibration. Steel should solve that.

I do have in my tools a whopping big protrator (the angle measuring type) which is what I used to set the wing initially. I have just gotten lazy/cocky and have been doing it by eye.

Gotta say the research you've done with the wing is interesting, i wouldnt have bothered thinking about it (at least at this stage) but considering the gains youve seen i might have to factor it in (once i get all the other little jobs done )

Phil, it was a good chance to do some back to back testing, and I have to say I was expecting it to make a small difference but not 2 seconds. Going to these test days has been an eye opener. I gained a second from making small adjustments and testing them with out the distraction of competition, or the worry that I only have 5 laps and then another category comes out like on a race weekend.

The marshal said watching the laps without the wing it was obvious the car balance was all wrong. The areas where the car characteristicalLy sat flat and drove smooth the tail was everywhere and I was obviously getting out of the throttle through the sweeper out of the hair pin (Normally flat in third)

The missus bought me my christmas present and it arrived today. I had to open it to check it was, erm, 'right'.

To solve my high oil temps I now have a 10x16" Derale 16 pass oil cooler mounted to a Tornado 10" fan and 180deg F (85 deg C) Derale thermostat. It is all packaged up under the Pro Comp name. Confused? I'm just gonna call it the new oil cooler. Hopefully it should fit under the front guard with some remodelling and fooling around with the fittings. (It came with barbed hose or press fit gear, I want to run my current AN style / braided line setup)

I also got my new Branz bushes for the road car, and have sourced a cheap supra passenger seat so I know what I'm doing over christmas.

The last track day for the year got cancelled due to the race secretary quitting. Frankly I reckon he quit due to the lack of support he got this year. Events cancelled due to only 6 entries, but the private test day he organised in its place had over 25 separate cars attend- only one example. Regardless, it is a way to end the year. On the upside, NAMSC may not be running any events next year unless someone steps up and fills the race secretary position so it may be a good time to move on...

Need to decide what club to join in Adelaide. The Sporting Car Club of South Australia looks like the likely choice as they seem to run the majority of events at Mallala.

The cars and trailer get loaded this week for the trip south. I have one serious black off roader at the moment- I raised the suspension an inch at the damper which has translated to well over an inch in ride height increase. I can fit my whole fist between the tyre and the guard. I also raised the front bar and splitter to its 'transit' position, about an inch higher than normal. Looks kinda funny. It is all in the name of trying to transport company 'proof' the vehicle.

I also put a layer of clear contact over the sunroof for water proofing, disabled everything I figured someone would play with, and placed no less than 4 signs asking them nicely to turn the master switch (battery isolator) OFF before leaving the car.

bet the battery is flat when it gets delivered. Last time I had the cars and trailer transported despite the (one) sign the battery was dead flat and they had to jump it, the door handle was broken, and the trailer had several springs unseated. Not to mention that Ceva logistics 'lost' the trailer for nearly three weeks.

This time all three items will go via Toll Autotrans, hopefully on the same truck. Here's hoping I have a better experience this time.

Cheers Aiden. I believed the car had a 1:23 in it with a little more finessing, but I guess I'll never know. What I want to do now is get out to Mallala ASAP and drop a time to for comparison over the next set of mods.

When I get to RAdelaide I have a set of fibreglass guards and a bonnet coming from Lew's private stash at a nice price, a new oil cooler (hopefully to solve the oil temp issues) and I am considering redoing the front bar again.

I believe I am also due a set of tyres soon, as these are nearly 2 years and many track days old. There has to be a second or so in there as well.

Next year was to be the year I bought/developed some power, but we have just purchased a house again so until the mortgage settles into a routine it would be a little irresponsible to lash out and spend $5-7000 on a turbo kit, computer, fuel system etc. I might just buy good parts as they come up over the next 12 months and see how we go in 2012.

I could sell the red car, but then I'd have to buy something else and lets face it: after buying a second hand clunker of a ute there wouldn't be any money to buy a turbo anyway.

Hey Ben,

One things for sure you certainly have an understanding missus.

Well i just spent the better part of 7 hours both at work and home reading and going to only have your skill, all in all im new to the soarer world and love seeing what you've done no doubt if you ever make it to brisvegas there will be more than one willing to buy you a drink or two!!

OK so im not so hands on but i have only one comment could you not remove the blinkers on the side of the car and use them for air vent the for breaks or what ever or just cover them?? they kinda seem out place?? may be you just need to clear them?

2ndly are they the factory 12a's you have on your car or have they been changed in some way??.

Keep the post comings good luck with the move.

Paul- I'll call you today.

Carl-the turbos are exactly as they left the factory, but older. I have a set of custom and quite dodgy dump pipes under them, but that is about it. I believe they are running 10-12psi (the gauge is mainly there so I can see if something goes wrong)

As for the blinkers, I don't really care what they look like. They weren't heavy enough to delete for weight saving and I am am not interested in modifying stuff for looks only. They are in a low pressure area so air would flow out not in, and it wouldn't be a meaningful amount of air to cool brakes anyway.

I have spent hours looking at the frontal area and really want to build something like the current falcon V8 supercar front bar. A single big opening with ducts leading off to the coolers and on each side. I also want to incorporate some sort of brake cooling.

I am very hands on, but know enough to research before jumping in. I have no trade background at all, and my Dad was never into cars etc. I just like doing labour type stuff myself. And I love tools. If you want to have a crack at anything you have seen here I am more than happy to find pictures, explain, advise, guess etc to help out.

I might get to Qld. I grew up on the North Coast of NSW and wouldn't mind moving back that way one day. Plus there are a couple of tracks in southern Qld I'd like to have a go at.

The missus is good. She has her hobbies, I have mine. We both like motorsport, but watching wasn't enough for me. She is fine with it as long as I keep the money side of things under control.

Cars rocked up today. There is no external damage, but the track car battery is dead flat. Prick didn't tell me until after he switched it off in the middle of the driveway and was walking off. Couldn't even jump start the damn thing.

Got it on the charger overnight and we'll see what happens. I really don't want to spend three hundred bucks on a replacement.

Had a pretty crap removal all told. Heaps of damages (computer, washing machine, scanner, glass shelves, bed head, and nearly everything in the first container has some sort of rubbing damage. Never seen anything like it). Will take some time to work through it all and claim damages through the removals etc.

At least we didn't lose the trailer this time...
