| Yeah good article that one. I am reading Simon McBeath's "Competition Car Downforce" at the moment. Five pounds on ebay... I have just bought an old vertex (copy?) front bar from Scott. I am looking at using this as the basis for a new front bar that incorporates a longer splitter and quick fit mounts. I am also looking to add in brake ducting as well as the brakes cop a hammering at Mallala. I have been working on the vents for the guards, but progress has been slow. Hopefully the moulds will be ready tomorrow. |

| How long since you scaled and corner weighted the car?? The wheel arch pressure reading you've been taking, at the top of the guard, where it's 2" differential, is that higher pressure inside the guard, or is it a low pressure inside there?? Silly question, but sometimes it pays to check the obvious. Awesome progress so far. It would be worth having new rear tyres to match the new fronts, even though the rears look ok, they have had a few heat cycles and will be passed their best. You're right about the softer rear bar, though, should take a little load off the rears and help. |

| I have never corner weighted the car. I have not found a set of scales cheap enough to buy to make it worth while for me at home. I have also never been anywhere where the service is available. I do believe that there are some places in Adelaide that can do it from past conversations but haven't looked into it. I do all my own alignments, but one day I might go and get a race car prep professional to have a go. Definitely a higher pressure inside the guard and lower pressure outside. I placed the 'sensor' both under the guard, and behind the cooler location and had the same reading. The moulds for the vents turned out pretty crappy. Despite the 8 coats of wax, the mould stuck to the 'plug', which pulled from the car completely. This meant I spent ages (2 days) cleaning all the clay, plaster and filler out of the mould and then cleaning up the mould. They are still not good enough, but I am at the point where I just want something to put on the car. I'll wax them up as they are and see how they turn out. I cut the steel out of the guard today. Guess I am comitted. I also started work on the front vertex bar. I fitted it up. It needs heaps of work to fit nice, but before I worry about that I need to address the fact that the front of the lower lip is rasied up 40mm higher than the rear, meaning that fitting a splitter to the bottom won't work. I started that with a corflute splitter and filling the gap with expanding foam. I could not find any foam sheeting today so resorted to the expanding foam, despite the fact I have had poor results in the past. |

then I made a fibreglass mould of the vents:

| and this is how they cam out of the mould after some trimming. The other one needs a fair bit of work, but will do the job.
There is still some neatening up to do, but I should have them in and fitted by the Toyoshow next weekend. |

| Also some pics of the vertex front bar I am using as a basis for the new front bar. As you can see the front edge is considerably higher than the rear edge (about 40mm).
I decided to fill the gap with expanding foam as i couldnt find any foam sheets.

| I then decided that the front opening did not line up well enough with the radiator and intercooler, and the way the splitter met the bar was no good either. So I decided to cut it up...
I also decided to fill the spotlight holes. I will probably fill the blinker holes as well. I am also considering filling the front letterbox intake because it serves no purpose. The other option is to re-do the air box to incorporate this opening as a pick up for cool air. |

| Update: Wouldn't believe the car is entered in a Motorkhana and carshow this weekend would you?
We (me and the boy) decided we wanted to give the car a bit of a visual impact for the weekend so we painted the motorkhana rims fluro green. Man they are a lot brighter than I expected. He wanted fluro pink, and I wanted dayglo red. We settled on green.

Yea, well and truly. The supra rims have about 3-4mm clearance, but the Ford ones have about 10mm. The hub centre is too big, but I only use them for sitting in the shed, or motorkhana.

What? I'm short on time. I do the vents and then while they dry I do the next job on the front bar, and then switch back etc. I S13 platform would be a no brainer for making a circuit car. You have tons of aftermarket support, and the are loads lighter to start with. I'b be wary the big heavy six doesn't upset the handling. |

| Bloody brilliant Ben. We'll make a glasser out of you yet. You should see the finish on some of the front running cars in other categories. As long as it looks good in the pictures for the sponsors and works on the track, who cares. Love the green wheels against the black.

I know someone who made America's Cup yachts in Spain out of carbon fibre using the heater and cardboard box method of curing. Nothing wrong with that at all. cheers michael |

| I'm itchy. Come and have a look tomorrow. I am entered in the Toyoshow Motorkhana at Edwards Park (off ANZAC Hwy). I'll be there from 9am for most of the day, and then at the show and shine on Sunday (Wigley Reserve, off ANZAC again). I'll be with the SASupra guys. Still need to fill the blinkers, come up with a better mount system (DZUS or similar) and smooth out some of the joins, but I was running out of time. Plus I don't own any bog. Just waiting for the missus to get home so I can see if it fits on the trailer. |

| I agree with you regarding additional vents looking better. I am wondering if there is enough 'vent' to do the job. I have to admit the reason I stopped at 4 each side is every single vent is shaped different and needed to be made individually. There is a lot of work in those vents, more than was in the front bar, believe it or not. In hindsight it may have been easier to just cut and shape louvres into the steel guards. |

| I entered the Toyoshow motorkhana and show n shine this weekend. Motorkhana was very wet, but still a chance to throw the car around and have some fun. Show n shine was also plagued by miserable weather, but ended up reasonably dry. I somehow came away with 'Best Displayed Vehicle' and "Toyochamp 2011' awards. Pretty happy with that effort, seeing as I was only going to the show to support the SASupra guys, and meet some new people.

| I went solo, so I only have stuff shot on the gopro from various angles. I gave all my footage to the organiser today, so he might be putting something together. He put some cameras on mine and other cars during the day, and he shot some video from outside the car. I might do something with my footage, but it wont be too great. No smoke due to all the rain, unfortunately. |

And I always though swapping the engine in an RX7 kinda defeated the point lol! Maybe I should but one in the '79 Corolla? might make it a bit of a handful for rallying though lol |

Some emails went to and fro with Jason the editor, he requested some pics, and most of that 'wrote' the 'letter' that was featured. You know they are growing on me. I might have to think about doing something with the actual track wheels. I need to find fluro paint in the liquid form. It is bloody expensive to buy in a spray can, and gives a crappy finish to boot. |

If you liked that, you and Michael will love this.
It is bloody freezing outside. Even with 3-3.5 % catalyst the resin is not going off. New oven needed to be constructed to get the mini diffusers to dry. I want to put these into the front undertray (in front of each wheel) before I figure out where the brake ducting can run. I am reading "Competetion Car Downforce" by Simon McBeath. Full of good ideas. Next on the list of things to do is create a flat floor leading to a venturi to feed the diffuser. This should maximise the performance of the diffuser. I am thinking coreflute with a single layer of glass cloth over the top for rigitity and a little survivability. Might need to see how the exhaust will interfere. Last thing I want is a fire under there. |

| Yep, perfect oven set set up. If it is that cold the resin might not cure properly if it is summer grade. In winter they add more accelerant to the blend of polyester. More catalyst won't help once it is past a certain point, which is why the heater helps. Check the date on the resin. If it was packed in summer, this is the problem. You can buy the accelerant to add to the resin before you add the catalyst in winter, but it is a whole lot of mucking about. And always buy just enough resin to do the job. Buying a 20lt drum and sitting on 18lt over a year is just a waste of money because it won't be the right grade for the time you are using it and a year later is probaly full of water and useless. Of course getting something in date from a local hardware is going to be difficult, so I always prefer to get it from an industrial material supplier. All you need to do now is to start vacuum bagging using your compressor with an eductor to create the vacuum! cheers michael |
