| Hopefully Kurt. It is something that can degrade, though. Obviously it wasn't doing it on the dyno when it was being tuned. Aaron - Not sure at this stage. I have looked at both the sunroof car, and non sunroof car. There is no skeleton in either. I was thinking of pulling the skin and keeping skeleton, but there ain't one. At the other end of the scale, just gluing it over the top of the original steel. I will probably end up somewhere in the middle. I will weigh some bits of steel skin and figure out if weight savings are big enough to risk any strength reduction. |

| I had a garret gt 35 on my car years ago Ben and had it tuned with my wolf v500 on 3 settings- 10 psi, 16psi and 20 psi. It ran great for a few days after it was tuned and the completely lost the 20psi setting and the missing would come and go on the 16 psi setting so was just on the verge for that boost setting. the 10 psi setting was perfect. It'll be the same issue as mine just ran good for a bit then went crap. |

| Got the carbon roof on the car this weekend. Had a little helper drill out all the rivets holding the Perspex sunroof in.
I decided to cut out some, but not all of the sheet metal in the roof.
I used SikaFlex 252 to bond the carbon panel to the remaining steel roof.
The Carbon roof weighs 1.5kg. The steel, Perspex and aluminium I removed weighs 3.7kg. Not a huge savings, but when you consider the roof is actually replacing a 25kg plus sunroof you gain some perspective. More importantly, I am hoping the car is now waterproof for the first time in years. Car is on the trailer ready to be dropped at Morpowa after work tomorrow to look for the miss issue. |

| Spark. Or lack of it. They swapped for OEM coil packs out of their race car (now there's a sign...) and that made it better. Gapping the plugs down to .5 and it was OK. Supersparks are back in there until I can find something that actually works. I am thinking Matt Salkeld's idea is a goer, especially as he is local. He is pretty busy, and I would want them to be 'plug and play'. I have spent a fortune rewiring the engine bay so I am not keen on hacking it up yet. If Matt doesn't work out I might run the supersparks on a lower boost as they were fine up to about 15-16 psi. |

| Carbon boot got done today. It was a bit floppy on its own, so I used Andrew's inner skeleton mould to make a skeleton, and now it is as stiff as a 17yo at a bikini contest.
As you can see from the pics, the inside looks very un-carbon-like. That is where I used nylon material from the dress shop trying to cut costs on proper peel ply. Won't be doing that again. It took three hours of grinding with a wire wheel and orbital sander to get it to a stage that was good enough to bond the skeleton to. It simply does not 'peel' off like it should have. I now own a big roll of proper peel ply from my mates at playwithcarbon. |

| G'day James. I wish I had the time and necessary skills to guarantee a perfect part in a timely fashion. It is a moot point as all the moulds I have made have already been swapped for a bonnet moulding. And Bourbon. The only problem with selling bonnets (etc.) is that the Facebook generation expect it to be absolutely perfect, but cheaper than they can get a poorly made, cheap Chinese piece of crap on line. Everyone of my parts so far has had some small imperfection, from numerous pin holes, to small areas where the resin simply did not flow through all three layers. It still cost me about $100 per meter to lay up the part. (My bonnet will end up with 10m of carbon in it because I refuse to do a couple of 'bulk' layers of fibreglass in between two layers of carbon. So it will cost me $1000 to make if I had to by all the materials for the job in one hit.) I have in the past, and will continue to do favours for my friends. There is an understanding that you are doing your best, and are helping them out. If I was to make a bonnet for someone off a forum, it would be money up front, and you get what you are given. End of story. Unfortunately, the moment someone doesn't get $1000 of value for their $100 outlay they will slander you all over the internet. Having said that, if you want a bonnet and can handle my terms then let me know. |

| Thats it Ben! Thats why if you are still going to make a set of guards later let me know a price. I know they wont be perfection but its for a race car.. and will allow my wheels to sit properly inside guards haha |

| Fair enough and totally understand where you are coming from Ben. Was just thinking as the bonnet's need to meet certain criteria due to frontal impact laws, a boot lid I don't think does so, people can then go putting them on their cars and still be road legal. |

| Hey ben, how did it go with the workshop? Are you still keen on coilpacks? I can make them with the loom as well if I can take a quick look at the car to get measurements and such. Cheers, Matt |

| Canberra Clayton. Close enough. Wakefield park...back where it all began. Better beat 1:09.9. Matt - I was going to call you but your number was "private" on my phone. Pretty keen for you to come and have a look at my loom, and see if you can make something plug and play. I looked around a few wreckers (online) and couldn't find any Echos etc of the correct vintage. I haven't put a heap of effort into finding other models with the same engine etc. I am getting to the point where I have little time left to get a lot done. If I cant find the coils then so be it. At least if I have a loom to make it work I can chase some down in Canberra. In other news, the outer bonnet has been infused, and tonight I did a wet layup of part of the inner skeleton. That will cure for a day or so. The last thing to do is pull a mould of the vent on my steel bonnet, then pull a vent out of the mould and cut that into the bonnet. I have promised the missus that all fabrication on the race car is done by 16 November. After that I will switch focus to sorting out the house ready to move. |

| Been a productive week. I used the bonnet moulds I got from Andrew to make a standard bonnet inner and outer.
Then I made a mould of the vent on my steel bonnet.
Had a little bit of drama because just after I laid on the gel coat I looked across the bonnet and saw the PVA mould release that I should have put on first. Sacrificed a few layers of paint on the steel bonnet to save the mould. Just means more work if I was going to sell the steel bonnet complete with vent.
Then I made carbon vent from the mould. Unfortunately I ran out of hardener, and after ringing around I found a boat shop open on Saturday afternoon that had it in stock. The vent was then cut into the bonnet, and bonded with sikaflex 252. After a bit of faffing around trying different positions and procrastinating on if the vent should be slapped on top, or bonded underneath and poking through the bonnet I decided to go the nicer looking poke through method. Much more work though...
Then made up some steel brackets with captive nuts for the hinges to bolt to.
Finally bonded the two halves together, once again giving it 300grams of Sikaflex's finest 252. (if anyone knows where to buy the black 252 cheap let me know. Autobarn has it at $36 a cartridge. Bunnings has it for $28, but only in white). Car looks like a porcupine...

| I just went out and pulled all the clamps off the bonnet. Fit is OK, but I won't be winning any car shows with the panel gaps. For whatever reason, the bonnet is now closer to the passenger side guard, and slightly forwards on the passenger side as well. It all lined up nicely before I glued it. At the end of the day it will do what I need it to. The best part? All up, including the steel brackets to make the hinges work, it weighs exactly 5kg. The steel bonnet it replaces was 25kg, remembering that I had previously cut steel out of that as well. I am also no longer using the bonnet struts, which obviously weigh something too. Pretty happy considering my target weight was 7kg when I was doing all the working out. I used less resin and cloth on the inner skeleton than I had planned I think. Seems stiff enough, but I'll find out on Saturday - if the weather is OK. |

I think the latches he has installed are perfectly suitable Paul. Functional and different, not unlike the man himself. Excellent work on the bonnet Ben. Can't wait for you to move back east so I can put you to work... |
