| Ben are you saying you checked and there are no codes or that the installed unit is not ODB II compatible? Certain Haltech are ODB II compatible. Would be handy if it is. |

SO do I and I have an extreeeemely well stocked bar about 18m from my race car thanks to a few blokes who shall remain nameless, Andrew... Allan- sounds like you know a heell of a lot more about it than I do. I have no idea why it is or isn't shiny. Sykes- I am saying that there are no factory wires, computers, or anything in the engine bay. If the Haltech Platinum Sport 2000 is OBD2 compatible, I am not sure what it would be talking to. I am not across all its functionality. Actually I probably know how to use about 2% of its capability to be honest. Matt- going out to the shed after I have a brew and check here and FB for suggestions. I will dump oil, and work through a list of things I can check at my novice level. I have the day off tomorrow, however there is heaps to do around the house. By the end of the week I will have it back together regardless. I will start it up and record the noise. I assume if I start/crank it with the valve covers off oil will go everywhere? |

| yep... you can just put the covers on with only 2 bolts each side; all they will do is prevent splashing. |

| Though it might dribble from around the seals if not done up properly. Even leaving the oil cap off is a good way to find out how far the oil can spit! |

It's shiney because its hitting / rubbing something is my guess Ben... probably your noise? |

| Tonight I dumped the oil, there wasn't anything significant in it. It is in a milk container and will sit overnight. Hopefully anything suspended in it will settle and I can see it in the morning. Oil was darker than usual, but I am told that this is normal straight after a switch to e85. Checked exhaust manifold for loose bolts and leaks. checked all pulleys, fans, balancers etc. Still not sure what is wrong. |

| Dave Van Staveren brought his compression tester over and we tested the motor:
Cylinder | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | dry psi | 190 | 200 | 195 | 180 | 175 | 130 | wet psi | 205 | 210 | 205 | 190 | 180 | 160 | | COnfirms my idea the noise was coming from the rear. Still no idea what it is though. The battery is on charge now. Poor little thing was getting to the end of its abilities with all the cranking. |

| Did you look at that thing that Allan pointed out? I'm also curious as to its shine. Any evidence of the noise when you were cranking it over for the compression test? |

| I looked at the cam sensor thingy - it actually is not shiny at all. Might have been a camera flash trick. I fed a couple of feeler gauges in there and 0.6mm goes in easy, gets tight for a 0.8mm gauge, so they aren't touching. Plugs all look nice and new. The number six cylinder doesn't hold pressure either. I cranked until it was up to 160 psi and would go no further, and then let it sit. The gauge slowly dropped. Another cylinder checked this way held its pressure. What will a leak down test tell me? I assume there is some sort of special kit for it. A quick google says it involves filling the cylinder with compressed air and listening for leaks? |

| I've never done one myself, but the idea is that you fill the cylinder with compressed air and then figure out where the air is coming out to diagnose your problem. If you can detect air coming out of the plenum then its valve/springs. (same with the exhaust side i suppose). If you can detect air coming from the sump/oil filler hole then its piston rings. I haven't got a compressor so it wasn't an option for me. |

| I was just being lazy. I looked it up myself and there are some pretty good articles on it (yahoo, wiki, etc) Local auto parts shops don't have one. Autobarn might...ebay does. Basically two pressure gauges, restrictor, air inlet and a hose out to the plug hole. |

| Really hope it turns out to be a broken valve spring or something. If its the same thing I had when my 6th cylinder lost compression things are gunna get expensive.. |

| rebuilt my 1jz to standard spec for $1400 total thats with metal headgasket, everything to spec, bores honed, rings, bearings all replaced, head rebuilt and arp head studs etc... But yeah, sucks to hear about that Pro-tip; buy all the rebuild parts from the US, they're MUCH cheaper over there and you've got much more variety... unlike in Australia where nobody wants to rebuild an engine, it's fairly common there so the prices are much more competitive... Provided big end, crank and oil pump are still in good cond. |

Easy to make from air line fittings and valve. The only hard part is the hose fitting to screw into the plug hole- should be able to use a compression tester hose for that. Put one gauge on the feed line side of the valve, the other on the cylinder side of the valve. When you open the valve, both gauges will equalise. close the valve and watch the gauge on the cylinder side. It will decrease in pressure compared to the feed line side. How much and over how long tells how good your cylinder sealing is. All you need to work out then is how bad is bad? I reckon in you case you are more likely to want to find out where it is leaking from. Just rig up adapters to the compression tester hose and get the air in there. The noise will tell you where the leak is. My money is on a burnt exhaust valve. Unburnt fuel getting squeezed past the valve and igniting in the exhaust is probably what the noise was if there is nothing in the oil, no loose whatevers . . . |

Spot on. I tried hooking air up to the cylinder, but I cant find a fitting narrow enough to fit down the plug recess. The plug hole is easy, 14mm threaded air hose fitting goes straight in with an O ring to seal, but the hose connector is to thick to get in the recess. Tried the pressure tester hose, but it has a one way valve in it and will not let air into the cylinder. I will just buy a leak down tester from ebay...$41 delivered. WHo cares how accurate it is, as long as it lets 100psi of air in there to help me find the leak. Air will either come out the exhaust, the air intake, or via the sump. Seeing as I have the covers off- I will might even be able to tell which valve it is if I am lucky. |

| OK. Now in the house in Canberra. Garage is quite tight, and driveway is shared with other houses. Still trying to figure out how and where things are going to end up. Race car is living at a relatives until then. I have been busy on eBay over the Christmas break, buying: compression tester (who knew they were only $30?) leak down tester Engine crane and load leveller Engine hoist House only has 10A power. I am going to try and bodgy up a 10 to 15A lead to see if the air compressor can run on 10A. Otherwise I will need to have a 15A point put in on my own coin. The other point of frustration: Our house does not seem to be able to be connected to the internet. That should be etched into the driveway, or there needs to be a plaque next to the door warning prospective tenants that this house is stuck in the 1970s. After 2 weeks waiting for Telstra to find a solution we have gone and bought a wireless mobile dongle thing. Until you lose it, you do not realise how much of your life relies on the net. You actually need the internet to shop for the internet... |
