yep.

But just in case there was any doubt:

hmmm attachment button is not working. Seeing as I cant post a pic, imagine the number six cap is black and glossy, and all the rest are a nice honey colour.

Bottom end rebuild it is. I have a set of spare rods if that one isn't salvageable.

Also, I have a set of ARP rod bolts and little end bearing/bushes I didn't end up using in my build. PM me if your interested.

Oouch that doesn't look good!
Not sure if you can fix that as the crank shaft looks really damaged. Also the rod will be no good & if the bore is out of round then there is no hope.
Really sorry to see that Ben!!

I should point out that mess on the crank is actually the bearing, or what's left of it. I levered it off with a screwdriver after that pic was taken. The actual crank surface is marked, but nowhere near as much, closer to the cap surface.

I'll take a pic later.

At the moment I am waiting to see if the 1J in the wreck out the front of Neil's is a goer. I am also asking around Canberra to see if I can find something to get it going quick.

Long term plan will be to build something, either 1, 1.5 or 2J based. Current speculation is lack of oil to the number six bearing has caused this.
So, preventing that in the future is also a priority.

Nice boat anchor mate. Hard luck. We might have to have a look at your oil system - I had to do the same thing in the past with spun bearings.

I think I saw a picture of a maroon Soarer with a donor engine in it. Oh that's right, it was in the garage next to your car.

I am waiting on some pics of the build of this 1J in QLD. The price is on par with what I think the parts to fix my engine will cost. Lew reckons shipping will be $100ish to Canberra. I think this will be the best way for me to go.

This other motor has new oil pump, water pump, etc so most of the things I would be doing while this engine is out.

Will probably rebuild the powersteering pump as well. There was a bit of seepage around it.

Might be time to port those exhaust manifolds too.

Facebook is for the brainless masses, whose opinions are unimportant. However, for once they are correct. It is cactus mate. Leave it out the front for metal recycling, or use your technical skills to make one of those neat coffee tables out of it. Make it Kim's birthday present so she can have it in the lounge room. She'll love you for it.

anal retentive? The books (and Lew) say to make sure that the caps, bolts, bearings, shims buckets etc all go back exactly where they came from. Given I don't have any room to lay it out neatly, I thought I would buy some Tupperware so it can be stacked. I was a bit off on the piston/rod Tupperware. Lid doesn't close. Will keep an eye out for something better.

Any way, you cant talk...

How important is the stock oil cooler on the side of the block? I am running an external oil cooler, but am happy to refit the stock cooler as well if they are a good thing. Coolant temps are not a problem, but oil temps are a touch on the high side. (120 deg C after a couple hard laps)

New engine does not have the stock cooler fitted, from the looks of the pics I have been sent.

Nah, it is a GTE. A lot of guys remove the stock oil cooler. I am just not convinced it is a great idea. Yes, it makes for a cleaner engine, easier filter changes, and the cooler takes up plenty of space, but once again Toyota deemed it necessary.

Just looking for opinions on it. I have mine sitting here. I did not realise the motor had so much hanging off it. I assumed it was a bare engine initially until the pics came through.

I think the "cooler" is really meant to bring the oil to operating temp quicker. When I removed mine I found it totally blocked and it appeared to have been that way for a long time.
I've had similar temps to Ben in the past so it seems it doesnt do much, if anything.

do be careful buying a "rebuilt" motor make sure you stuck an inspection camera down the plug holes and sump before handing over any coin, check for stripped threads on the block / head...

2JZ-GTE I had at one stage had a couple of stripped plugs and one of the 4 that come out was a HKS plug :-)

Allan, I did not have that opportunity due to the tyranny of distance. I have rolled the dice on this one. Despite my misgivings, I am hoping that not every one on the planet is out to rip me off. It is a calculated gamble based on what it would cost to put my engine back together.

I will certainly have the cam covers off and check tension etc and then form a plan from there. Hopefully I will not need to rip the sump off and check all the bolts etc. An inspection will inform that decision. I might be borrowing Neil's camera though...

Clayton, I will not be using the loom as I have a custom one made already, but yeah it would have been a bonus.

I have also been looking at all the coolant lines running around the block. I reckon I can simplify some of it with out adversely affecting things, particularly the bits associated with the heater which I don't have anymore.

Might throw the cooler question on facebook. It seems that the engine conversion guys are the ones doing it.
