I'd keep the cooler and throw a TRD thermostat in to drop coolant temps... I'm actually putting one on my 1UZ...

I have been having a look around online: it seems there are a few performance shops selling the adaptor to remove the stock oil cooler. Driftmotion, Titan,Gameon, Marks Engineering etc all have one for sale. Haven't found any stated reasons to remove the oil cooler beyond having more room to work on lower manifold.

Allan, do you reckon it would adversely affect oil temps? I have the coolant temps under control with the larger radiator, factory fan and shroud, and my custom front ducting. I would like to see the oil temps lower, not higher. I think we can safely assume my spun bearing was due to an oiling issue. Not so much oil temp, but likely lack of oil. I am going to lash out and spend on a top quality oil cooler, probably a serck 235mm core 25 row cooler with -10 fittings. My current oil cooler has -6 fittings, and whilst it had marginally better cooling than the Greddy style cooler I was running I want to eliminate it as a possible restriction. My oil lines are all -10.

I would never have thought of an Accusump. I have done some reading (online forums) and the opinion is that Accusump is a great bandaid solution, but the best solution is to have the sump modified (additional capacity via wings etc and baffled). I haven't found any one selling such an item for the 1JZ. Most of the opinions I have received are that the 1J is fine, or that with a new or upgraded oil pump it is fine. I have some video of my oil pressure gauge that clearly shows 1Js suffer oil surge under heavy braking. An accusump is probably going to set me back around $500 to set up. I'll keep looking into it. Have you had much experience with them Allan?

A mate of mine swears by them and never had oiling issues on his 400+rwkw supra that pulled crazy G's in the corners and had big brakes, I will put one on my car when I get to that stage...

Get your sump modified with extra capacity and more importantly, baffles? Cheaper and more likely to actually save the engine than accusump

I agree with Matthew. Maybe not so much the extra capacity, but yes to the baffles. Craig who did your roll cage can modify your sump with baffles - he did mine as well. Also, the 4A-GE used to suffer from oil surge problems due to the pump being too efficient, especially at high revs (which it was always doing). The top end of the engine used to fill up with oil and it couldn't drain back down to the sump quick enough, then the engine would spin bearings as a result. We fixed it by running extra external drain lines (one at the front of the engine and one at the back) from the head back down to the sump. Cheap and easy to do for a man with your skills, and may save you some heartache. |

I might send Craig one of the sumps to modify then. Doesn't seem like there is an off the shelf option. I have had many people send me ideas via the book of faces, and Accusump is the leading contender. I think Accusump is an excellent bandaid, and the pre oiling is a bonus. I think it addresses the symptoms and provides a failsafe to protect the engine. I think that ensuring that the sump delivers a constant supply of oil to the pickup is the ultimate solution. Seeing as the engine is out of the car (it hasn't even arrived yet), I think I will sort the sump nd oil cooler first. If there is still an issue, or if I find a little extra cash I might do the accusump later. Can you pm me Craigs current number?

Replacement engine rocked up today. Had some issues - the pallet appears to have been made from balsa wood and matchsticks. The pallet broke and the engine fell through onto the sump at some stage in it's journey from QLD. Sump looks to be intact, as does the harmonic balancer with just a little paint off. Andrew- I cant get hold of Craig, although I did have a missed call from a private number tonight but no message.

make sure you check over it carefully i'd say that took a tumble off the pallet altogether! was this an e-go / hunter express job? they managed to kill a rear subframe in similar fashion that i purchased!

It was ego. The pallet was packed by the seller though. I don't think it took a tumble, none of the light metal fittings are bent, and the position on the pallet matches the before photo the seller sent me. It had a significant amount of bubble wrap though. I am trying to sort out a fabricator to baffle my sump, so I'll give the motor a going over in the meantime. I have decided there is no rush. I had hoped to run at Wakefield on the 12th of April, but now I no longer give a . If it is not ready, I'll go up drink bourbon and help out the others running their cars.

Yeah I have ripped the intake manifold off and had a poke around. Head is spotless inside and out. Just working out what to keep, what of mine to reuse etc. Interestingly he has cut the back off the Aircon pump so you can use the OEM accessory belt, ie the only thing left is the pulley and front cover. I just deleted it entirely on my motor and found a shorter belt. I like this as the powersteering pump has all the factory bracing from the aircon mount. Might keep it if I can find the old belt I removed.

| Spent the day cleaning up my intake manifold and swapping parts across to the new motor. Found a roll of thermal exhaust bandage in a parts box, along with some turbo beanies. Decided to wrap the dump. I know there will be a lot of people against this, but I have always been curious about it. I have heard all the horror stories about it rusting the pipes in less than a week, melting heads, and killing all the whales but I figured I would test it for myself. Under bonnet temps are always an issue, and so is my melting left foot. Hopefully this helps.
I don't think I will use the beanies as the factory shielding is pretty good. Here is a pic of the cams and head. All nice and clean.
Also a pic of the mounts that were on the engine- are these the TRD ones???
And here are some pics of the factory sump. Looks like I will have to sort the baffling myself if I want it done in the next few months.

Craig is booked solid for the next two months. The guy I have been recommended down here is so busy he isn't taking calls. I think I might put the engine together and get it running so it is getting broken in. Might even do the accusump thing to combat the oil surge that is likely to still be there. New oil pump and better oil cooler might be enough, but I am still keen to baffle the sump. I found the pics in your build thread. Nice job, but your sump is a different shape to mine. It is within my skills to design and build it. I need to get the car out of the garage so I can bring in the welder and other bits of equipment to fabricate though. Catch 22: need the car out so I can build sump. Need sump so I can get car out.
