Maybe, although we're using pretty high quality fluid and it hasn't discoloured so I'm not sure. We may be getting a little bit of pad knock-off, which I won't be able to really confirm until the car is on the track again.

Front main seal if oil coming from bell housing area, or rear seal if the oil starts further down the tunnel (likely to be over tail shaft and in a neat spray pattern over the inside of the tunnel). Check it isn't coming out through the shifter hole too. |

| Sorry. After posting I went outside and pulled the shifter boot out of the car. I am almost certain the oil is coming from the shifter. I did some googling last night and it would appear my car does not have a rubber gasket between the shifter and the box. Item 33599 in the pic below.
apparently it is Toyota Part Number: 33584-22020 GASKET, CONTROL SHIFT LEVER RETAINER I will need to find a Toyota dealer who can get this part for me. |

| After trying Toyota, who have no Australian stock (4-6 week wait), trying US websites (part cost 83-87 cents, postage ranging from $65 - $125), and looking to the aftermarket in Australia I decided to make my own Gasket, control shift lever retainer, No 2.
I couldn't get the recommended 0.4mm paper. The closest I could get was 0.8mm. I also could only buy it by the roll, so I have a meter or so left for, erm, next time. |

| Good bet for the source of the oil, judging by how much is present over the inside of the transmission tunnel and under the shifter boot area in that photo? Make a gasket for the shifter boot too, that should stop it coming into the cabin at least. And you may need a new blade for that craft knife. Those cuts are awful! I know you won't see it, but you'll know. |

| The outside was 'cut' by a small hammer against the sharp edge of the metal. Only used the knife for the inside circle. I have enough paper to make another thousand or so... I put the new springs on the front coilovers and installed them tonight. The springs are 25mm longer than the ones they replace, which is confusing. There is plenty of shock body to accommodate, but you would think that replacement springs would be the same size. I am doubting the springs have sagged exactly 25mm over the last 5 years. |

How do they compare with wire diameter and number of loops of the coil? |

| Looks to be the same wire diameter, and the loops are the same, but are spaced further apart. I have a photo on the camera somewhere. |

| Pity we didn't run into each other. I am heading to Eastern Creek tomorrow to look at sports sedans with Andrew. I didn't really see much today I could apply to my car. I did see a Honda with carbon fibre wing uprights. This is something I have been thinking about for a while. I was starting to assume that there must be a good reason why people were not doing it, and that I was just not seeing it. Good birthday weekend so far. The missus and family purchased me 7 laps around Marulan driving a V8 supercar, so I'll need to schedule that in sometime too. First world problems... |

| After a weekend of looking at other peoples cars I decided to get back to mine. The Time Attack Regs all now say the rear wing must not extend more than 100mm to the rear of the bodywork. Mine is 170mm, so 70mm to far. I have intended to sort the rear mounts ever since I rushed around getting them in there. Seeing as it to too cold and miserable to work with fibreglass and carbon I found some 4mm and 6mm aluminium sheet today and have set about designing rear wing mounts that will place the wing in a legal position. Turns out it is pretty difficult to get the wing in the right spot without bolting it to the boot lid.
The plumb bob shows where the rear of the mount needs to be for the wing to sit in the correct spot. Of course the normal de servicing also needs doing. The oil cooler had to be pulled out and drained as I am switching from the mineral oil for running the engine in to my normal synthetic.
The new shifter bush arrived in the mail today, so now I am only waiting for the new shifter seat before the gearbox can be sealed back up and checked. |

| Made a start on the rear mounts today. Weather is freezing, so figured I'd come inside and warm up a bit before heading back out to do some welding. The ally uprights are cut and shaped. I used a jig saw with surprisingly good results. I also used a jigsaw to cut out some more of the sheet metal in the boot/rear panel area. I ended up cutting right through the edge of he boot support because I couldn't get the wing mounted where I needed it. I plan to weld some steel in the front side to brace this area as currently it is a bit floppy.
Gotta go out to the storage shed and get the welder and some scrap steel. (Damn this little house!) |

| Looks good man! So guessing that makes it legal for the time attack and sports sedan regs now? Only problem is still going through boot so you wont be cutting that carbon one soon And yes how bloody cold is it!!! Went to try make some wing braces and too bloody windy to try figure out right position! |

| DO you want the ones I just took off? They might help: The wing mount at the top is 130mm centre to centre for the bolt holes. You can make adjustment plates to adapt to other sizes anyway. If you don't want them, I will put them on gumtree or something. I picked up the carbon boot from the shed tonight. She will go under the knife later tonight or tomorrow. Just got to figure out how to mount it. Might use those dodgy aerocatches or some bonnet pins. I have welded all the subframe up for the wing mounts. Basically just cleaned up what was there, added some reinforcing and tidied up some of my welds ever. Tomorrow should see it all primed and painted. I also finished doing all the oils and filters. A contributing factor to the leaky gearbox has got to be the fact that when I drained the oil, over 5L came out. When I spat oil out of the filler hole and then topped it up I lost track of how much was in there. Whoever said just fill it until the oil level reaches the filler hole is very, very wrong. It now has just over 3L in there again. I really need to sort out that front bumper. |

| Carbon boot got the chop!
Because all the boot hardware got removed I used a pair of bonnet pins and some case catches to secure the carbon boot to the car.
Wing mounts got etch primed and painted satin black, as did all the raw steel in the surrounding area. I am pretty happy with how it turned out.
New mounts are pretty sturdy. I can hang from the wing in the centre (90 odd kg), and can just about hang from either end. I probably could hang from the end, but am too chicken to commit incase I bend something. Wing is dead level, according to the spirit level. I also changed the adjustment system from a slot to a series of holes, each one giving about 4 - 4.5 degrees of angle of attack. A second series of holes gives slightly different steps of adjustment. The second set were supposed to be 2 degree increments, but somewhere the trig got screwed, and they are very close to the main holes. They might get slotted later if it turns out I need the finer adjustment. Currently I am waiting for some repairs on the front splitter and undertray to bond.
I have taken this opportunity to re-profile the leading edge of the splitter and undertray. I made the bar before really taking an interest in how aerodynamics work. Many text books later, I learnt there might be a minor gain in front downforce if the underside of the splitter is shaped like the underside of a wing (in race car terms). Close inspection of the V8supercars splitter shows they have done the same thing, and have run like that for years.

| Mate, going back to your sump issues have a look at this Article for a simple way to increase volume http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/ID/3417/PageID/7483/Project-350Z-Increasing-Oil-Capcity-with- Jim-Wolf-Technology.aspx |

| Hmmm. That is a simple idea. I went googling after reading that article, but they only do Nissan crap. I did find a guy who is doing 'deep racing oil pans' for the 2J. http://codyphillipsracing.com/store/store/cp-racing-2jz-deep-lower-oil-pan/ have got in contact with him but they haven't decided on the pricing yet. I need to compare the sumps to see if they are interchangeable. I would think so, but could be wrong. |

| Yeah, I have a spare sump complete sitting on my saw bench. The plan was to baffle it. I'll get to it eventually. Maybe. The mig is at the house because I needed to weld the rear wing mounts. Currently working on the front bar at the moment. Need to repair it, get the car on the ground so I can check the alignment, and put the tranny back together. All before Thursday as I am hitting the track again. |

| The weekend was miserable and cold. Through the use of thermal underwear and a bar heater I persevered and got the front bar repaired. I skinned the splitter in carbon, with the damaged area getting about 5 layers to restore some strength. It is only a wet layup, so no glossy finish, more like very expensive paper mache.
The damaged mount was thoroughly cleaned out with a dremel to give some raw fibres and a flat surface to work with. I shaped a piece of aluminium (with a hammer and a tyre, LOL) to suit the compound curve. This was bonded in behind the bar with some epoxy and the whole lot covered in a couple layers of carbon.
Tomorrow it will get sanded to the final shape. Hopefully it fits up OK. |
