Your exhaust design seems strangely familiar.

Can't remember how many turbos you have, but for some reason this motivational poster made me think of your car.

I did spend a bit of time under your car...

Truth is it looks like Aaron's too. And Ray Goodluck's in SA. There really aren't many other options to go side exit.

I have some plans for a new rear diffuser to take advantage of all that room now.

Update time.

I took the car to the RENEW track day back in July. It rained all day and was bloody freezing. Times were down accordingly, but I ended up going home with a second place trophy. The carbon front bar and new undertray held up fine. The side exit exhaust also got a work out and performed perfectly. One unintended consequence is water vapour fogging up the drivers door if you sit in the cold idling with the door open. Oh well.

Whilst I was waiting for some Kevlar supplies to arrive I decided it was time to update the tired old engine undertray or under cover or whatever it is actually called. I made a mould out of MDF laminated and shaped by hand before being given a few coats of polyurethane clear.

I have also been looking to improve on the side skirts that were basically slapped together out of chux cloth, resin, and black paint several years ago.

This will be my Christmas holiday project and as always I will end up winging it as I make them on the car. But here is how they are supposed to turn out...

The other project on the go is more power.

Kurt, Glenn Munro, and myself have got together with the idea of assembling a Frankenstein twin turbo setup on the side of the 1J. It basically involves a pair of Glenn's Stage 4 highflow CT20 (front only) turbos mounted on Kurt's custom manifolds to suit the 1J. It will also feature a full setup of Kurt's best bits: big dump pipe, high flow intakes and all the other bits he does so well.

The new setup will obviously need to be tuned, so I am going to use that opportunity to finally install the 1NZ coil setup Matt made for me over two years ago.

Hopefully there is enough headroom left in the ID1000CC injectors. If not I will need to cough up for bigger ID2000 injectors. I suspect I am going to need to. If so I will need to try and recoup some costs by selling the ID1000s. Shame - they have probably only done 600 - 800km. :-(

I am at 80-85% duty cycle now according to the data logger. I reckon we are going to need to go bigger.

400rwkw is an aspirational goal. I dont care if the number is greater or less, as long as the area under the curve is significantly increased and lap times drop. I will have to drag out the calculator and figure it out. I cant afford to tune to the injector limit and then take it back to be tuned again.

I can post whatever I get from the tuner...who I haven't chosen yet. I need to get around to some Canberra workshops and chat to them. The short list would be ESP, Ultimate tunes, and maybe trojan motorsports. I wish I were back in Adelaide so Morpowa could retune it. I like those guys and trust Simon.

Hi Ben - spotted your toy in old Cooma town yesterday at the 1000 event.
Been following this one for a long long time despite selling my Soarer over 5 years ago!!
Good to see it in the flesh and watch it/you take it for a burn down the runway.

Hopefully that event grows a bit in future years as may actually attract some spectators especially if some extra events are bundled in (oh and a bar when I could have bought a beer) :-)

G'day James,

Glad you liked it. Unfortunately the front splitter let go at about 220-230 kph. Not sure if it started dragging on the ground and then let go, if it hit a bump (THE RUNWAY IS MUCH BUMPIER THAN THE TRACK), or if it simply failed. Regardless, now it needs repair work so I may as well make it stronger.

Repairs are underway. The damaged areas were cut away. The foam core was repaired and the mould modified to create a rounded lower edge and winglet either side. Kevlar and carbon layers were consolidated in the mould and the whole bar placed on top. The layers were individually wrapped over the leading edge and onto the upper surface creating a single continuous surface. Another mould (flat mdf panel cut to shape) was laid on top of the splitter and every heavy thing in the shed placed on top to weigh it down.

Should see if it has worked tomorrow night, or Thursday if I find some patience behind the seat cushions.

Hey Ben

Regarding your tuning... I would highly recommend the guys at ESP... Grant and Glen are great guys and know their stuff !

My partner and I have both had cars go through multiple iterations with them and couldn't be happier with the results

Haha! Nope. Welders, ramps, stands, toolboxes etc

Cheers Mike. I finish work for the year next week. I plan to go and see them and a couple others around town next week and see if they are interested in tuning it.

Spent the day at Wakefield Park with Aaron. Neither of us could better our PBs, but we got close. I ran a string of 1:07s and a couple of 1:06.9s. Aaron got to within 3 tenths of his 1:09 he has been waiting for.

Pretty cool to have the two cars together both in the pits and on track. Hopefully Aaron's mate got some pics of the cars on track.

Shame it couldn't have been 3 cars.

Nice job both of you on some consistent running. Ben, that photo makes your car look like it needs a wash, which I doubt is really the case.

Any on-track photos?

I didn't take any, but Aaron had his camera there.

I flat spotted all four tyres in the last session with a spin at the kink.

I will buy another set of the NT01 if they are in stock at a reasonable price. I wont touch advans - overpriced in my opinion. I would love hankooks, but the fronts alone cost more than a set of NT01. Plus you cant get 275/17 in either Hankook or Advans - they don't make them.

So I have been busy after work this week. The side skirts are taking shape. I used some form ply to create a flat floor to work from. I have spaced the floor 32mm down from the actual floor in order to get it to line up with the engine undertray. This means the skirts will be sitting slightly lower than the old ones, and will sit flatter.

The skirt itself has been formed by a combination of MDF, 0.6mm ally, expanding foam and bog. I am happy with the shape so have covered the lot in polyurethane gloss. I will recoat tonight, and get ready for a wet layup on the weekend.

The skirts will be skinned in a combination of Kevlar and carbon. Once they are cured, the skin will be removed and all the formers dismantled, and the skins then fixed to the car. This should leave me a nice light skirt that fits perfectly. I am not bothering with a mould, as I will not be making another set.
