Boost per gear is easy enough to setup and just means you can use first and second gear properly. I have first gear set at 120kpa, 2nd 140kpa and 3rd, 4th and 5th @ 160kpa.

1st and 2nd are on the limit of traction for most roads, so then I expect the traction control to catch the occasional breakaway.

3rd can get a bit squirrelly too..

I'd imagine yours is similar

Good to hear Ben. I'd like to see both yours and Jason's car in the flesh sometime :-)

I've been challenged to a proper 1/4 mile drag race against a 66 Mustang with a 347 windsor next month which will be interesting!

Care to guess the winner and ET's?

So as per the previous post, one of my mates has a 1966 Mustang and has been trying to get me to the 1/4 mile for ages.

I finally agreed and we headed out to Willowbank test and tune night on the 4th.

Rules were, run it as is. No weight out, no additional tuning and race the tree.

It was very busy and we finally get to the staging area and the Mustang won't start (starter engagement issue) so I win by default and run a 13.3 @ 112mph against some big black thing that couldn't get traction, but monstered home..

We lined up again after he tinkered a bit and finally staged up next to each other and he deep staged.

I tried to motion him back into the normal two lights, but he stayed there and they ran the tree. This caught me by surprise and I rushed to get ready to launch and ended up with a bad reaction time, but went a better 60ft and 1/4 time of 13.2 @ 111mph.

The Mustang red lighted and ran 13.8 @ 100mph.

All in all it was a good night, but VERY busy with a long line up.

My boost control was horrible, but still was pretty pleased with the time considering it is not a drag car, it's not dyno tuned at all and I had 3/4 of a tank of fuel.

When I first got the car it did a 14.5 @ 92mph with the stock twins and 14 psi.

Out of interest I visited the local tip to see how much the old girl weighs with me and 1/2 a tank.

1640 kegs of GT luxury!

There's been a whole lot of nothing going on lately, but the time for my 1.5J conversion is fast approaching.

I'll be getting all of the parts needed in the next few weeks and will document the whole process here.

I've tried to go about it in the most cost effective way with the least hassle.

The first part being to use a GTE block. This cost me $1500 which was a low km vvti unit, this way I can use the standard pistons, rods and oil pump, and not have to drill or machine anything.

My 1J already has a near new water pump and harmonic balancer which will also be re-used.

The head recondition will be around $5-600 and the rest of the parts will be around $1600 from Goleby's which includes a BPP fuel rail and injectors which are not necessary, but my 650's are old tech and near the limit already.

So the basic break down is this;

2JZ-GTE block - $1500
1JZ-GTE Head reco - $600
2JZ-GTE Head gasket + ARP studs - $530
2JZ-GTE Timing belt kit - $228
1Jz/2JZ Rear main seal - $34
Water hose extension (came with block)

Total: $2900ish

BPP rail and injectors - $840
Plugs - 35
Coolant etc etc

Total: $3800 ish..

Not cheap by any means, but I will hopefully be able to sell the 1JZ block and injectors/rail to get a little back.

I would really like a vvti 1JZ-GTE head, or a whole 2JZ-GTE vvti, but I have a fair bit of $$ in my head already, even more considering the exhaust manifold etc and would then have to sell my 1JZ and manifold etc and be left with a stock engine.

I am open to offers and opinions tho.

Stay tuned for lots of pics and progress!

There's only one way to find out Ben!

I put in a solid couple of hours today with WD40, razor blades and adhesive remover getting the 2J block ready for it's new life.

The mating surface seems to be in pretty good nick. I'm going to use a surface stone on the deck area to just make sure there are no little high spots.

I won't be disassembling the rotating assembly, so i'll be very careful to not get any junk down the bores.

I use differential fuel pressure to compensate for injector flow too.. That way if the fuel pressure drops off for any reason, the ECU know that the injector will flow less, and will have to open it longer to get the right amount of fuel.

Nice work mate, i'm still watching your build. Great updates. There's not many of us running 1.5jz's any more.
I'm running a 6Boost manifold too, but there aint much room for the GTX3582R on top. It's cooked a bit of the bonnet liner even with a beanie on.

Cheers! I'll keep an eye out for sure, but my manifold was modified to suit the EFR. I had a look at clearances above the engine and there is easily an inch above the turbo even with the strut brace..

My beanie and wrap fell apart after 4-5 yrs hence the ceramic coating. I hope it lasts and is as good as people say.

Might be a different story if I end up going the 8374 EFR tho

Kyle knew i was building a 1.5jz, but i still think it could have been a bit lower/shorter to give me a little more clearance. Sensational workmanship, i'm very happy with it, the 6Boost kit is complete artistry.
I'm glad you modified the oil feed too. There a few guys that haven't and have paid the price. It was a tad tricky to get the angle right.
The ceramic coating certainly makes a difference, but even with it and the beanie i could still cook a few snags under there.

I had hoped to be doing a more complete post by now of a finished running car, but as always, the "while i'm here" bug has bitten pretty hard.

The cam covers were sent to Cory for AN fittings to be welded, then I paint stripped them and wrinkle coated them. Very happy with the result, I hope they last well.

The increased deck height of the block meant the brace and dipstick mounts on the manifold didn't line up, do I made little spacers

I had issues with the BPP fuel rail fitment, so went with the Radium which is a beautiful piece of kit, but the 'on rail' pulsation damper lined right up with the fwd cam sensor

Does nobody test their products anymore?

So of course I made a blank...

Made a nice blank for the throttle cable entry to the cabin and finally got an SC430 pedal from Canada. I couldn't for the life of me find a RHD version, so it needed a little bit of a massage to get the pedal position just right.

This is about where the project took a turn for the expensive....

The HD NPC organic clutch was already 100HP past it's rated power and didn't want to risk having it slip right after installing everything. So after literally a month of researching and looking I settled on an ORC carbon twin plate for it's smoothness of engagement, lightness of clutch plates (easy on synchros) and OEM hardware.

I have been burned with metallic clutches before and my friend has an ATS twin carbon and it is lovely. This doesn't hold the same power, but it was pretty much the same price as any normal twin plate kit, but I don't have to modify anything and with the correct break in, it should last forever (it also looks sex!)

Upload

With the conversion over to DBW a few more inputs to the ECU are required and this pretty much maxed out the pin count for the Elite 2500.. There's only so many things you can do with two connectors (26 and 34 pin) so I sold off the hardware and was able to cross over to the EMtron KV8 which is a much more open and capable ECU with double the pin count and other cool features like twin onboard wideband controllers (less boxes), accelerometers, torque modelling, and ethernet communications etc for about $150. I'll need to buy a few more sensors, but there is a lot more scope for future cool stuff with this ECU.

I also pull a HEAP of the unused factory wiring out that is no longer used. Ignitor wiring, old injector, IACV, diagnostics etc and made it semi hidden under the intake manifold.

Once the engine is back in I will finalise it and hopefully everything still works!

OH!

I also put a Turbosmart OPR40 oil pressure regulator on which keeps the oil pressure to the turbo at 40psi regardless of engine pressure, which may have been why my engine was smoking. Hopefully this sorts it.

If this turbo doesn't like the 3L bottom end or still smokes, i'm pretty sure this will be the replacement..

Absolutely incredible flow from such a small wheel and so efficient too!

Over 100HP more capable than the 7163 and should behave similarly...
