As promised I will post up thew components etc used in the new engine.

New head gasket, rings, ACL race bearings, ARP head studs, ARP main studs, ARP rod bolts, new seals, and 272 Camtech cam shafts were all purchased from Golbys. The supertech dual springs and retainers from Golby’s did not fit, so the correct Supertech ‘beehive’ springs for a 1J were sourced (more on that later). It is always good to buy the same parts twice. Or not. The good news is Chris got the correct springs cheaper than I got the incorrect ones. Lesson 1: sometimes better to let the builder source the parts. The Bexo baffles, windage tray and extended oil drains were all transferred from the current engine.

The lightened flywheel and clutch from the old engine were also sent to Chris so the whole lot can be fully balanced and assembled by C & M Engine Services. It was 43 degrees the day I pulled the engine and clutch and was bloody horrible out in the shed. Removing the lightened flywheel caused some drama, resulting in cheap spanners being welded to the bolts in order to get them out. The things we do for fun.

The block was honed, faced and washed up for assembly. The balancing is done and the pistons & rods were all washed up for assembly, as was the sump & pick up, the rocker cover and the 2 new camshafts,. A new OEM head gasket, along with all the seals and rear seal housing and front bits that bolted to the block were replaced.
The cylinder head cam caps, head bolts/studs, main bearing caps, sump bolts etc were cleaned up or replaced with ARP stuff where applicable. Each rod bolt was tensioned, loosened and re-tensioned. Total of 3 times for new bolts. 11 bolts at .0075" stretch and 1 bolt just short of .0075". Chris and I were happy so long as they don't exceed maximum stretch which is .008". This is an example of the detail I would not have thought to go into on my own. Lesson 2: Sometimes it pays to let the experts have a go.

The valve seats were done, head faced and valve clearances done and the head got all washed up to assemble and put on the engine last night only to find the valve springs don’t fit as alluded to earlier. After double checking Golby’s site to confirm the part numbers are the correct ones that they list we figured there must be some work required to make them fit (important note: this is not noted on the website!) Chris tried to track down a tool to machine the head to suit them. After some head scratching and calls to Supertech we decided they were not going to work in an engine that sees hours of abuse in a day. Might be OK for a 10 second drag queen, but not a circuit motor. Well, as Chris said, he can make anything fit, but if they are put in the head he has not way of guaranteeing the engine will not fail as a result. The problem is that quite a bit of material would need to be removed from the valve stem guides to fit the dual springs, and this would lead to valve issues and potentially the head self machining and feeding itself to the rest of the motor...or something like that.

As with any big build, or in actual fact any little job on an increasingly customised racecar there were a number of issues that needed to be solved along the way. Parts that arrived incorrect or incompatible with the combo such as the 1st oil pump sent was wrong, there were no expanders with the oil ring rails in the set supplied, I had to track down the o rings for the front oil galleries and the o ring for the ally sump to block. Chris ended up buying and bottom end gasket set, so now there are spares. There were no valve stem seals to put the head together but Chris had a set in stock.

The engine is now sitting in my shed, wrapped in plastic and ready to go in the car. I am taking a week off work next week, with the intention of fitting the engine. And getting it down to Brenton at Fours ‘n’ More for a larger 3 Bar MAP sensor and a new tune. I am giggly with excitement to finally drive a proper, fully balanced, ‘cammed’ motor. The final horsepower number will obviously be of interest to many, but I am actually more keen to learn how to drive the car with a cam and shift in power a bit further up the rev range. Chances are lap times will be a little slower until I learn what gear the car wants to be in for each of the corners at Mallala.

Nice work Ben.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the fresh engine can do. I'm still on the fence if i just bolt this stock 2J block on and send it, or toughen it up a bit like you have done.

The same Munro CT20 highflows will go back in. We have always wanted to see how they would go with cams. We were thinking 264 cams, but after much consideration and the realisation that I am often a bit cautious when it comes to the engine side of things, I decided to go with 272 camtech cams.

Brenton at Fours n More will tune it after fitting a 3bar MAP sensor to allow a little more boost if the turbos are happy to supply it.

My 264's turn the corner at around 7000rpm, so you should be good to 7500-8000rpm

The engine went in the car last week. Once again with the Wife helping we had the engine and trans in the hole in an hour. Definitely a fan of engine and trans bolting together before dropping it in.

It took another 4 hours to reconnect all the wiring, sensors, and fluid connections. It fired up after a little grumpiness and idled into life. After it warmed up it started to sound a bit lumpy like a rotary. It is certainly a grumpier engine.

The car has been sent off the Brenton at Fours N More for a proper run in and then a retune. I'll post up some results once they are known.

Tell me more about this engine and trans out together business?

Are you running the r154?

Looking forward to the results. Mine lopes @ 14.7:1 with the increased duration and lift, but @ 13.8:1 it's smooth as butter.

So obviously I have it at 14.7:1 hahaha

Well, Andrew, the car got a new set of lungs. After much success with the Munro Highflow CT20s I took the decision to go to a single turbo for the weight reduction and heat management. I am not looking for more power, so the target is the same 350-400rwkw that the CT20 could support. With this in mind I selected a Gen II GTX3076R turbo on a 6Boost manifold and aa 50mm external Turbosmart Progate.

There was a fair bit of custom work, as with everything on this car, including modification to the manifold with dual wastegate pipes to the progate, a dump pipe, screamer pipe, intake and modifications to fit the existing intercooler setup.

There were a few issues tuning the new setup, due to the size of the rear diffuser there was nowhere to tie the car down on the rollers. At 320rwkw the car kept breaking into wheelspin making it hard to get a peak power number.

I took the car out to Mallala for a shake down, having not driven for almost a year. The extra torque down low caught me out on the warm up lap - I can honestly say I have never spun on a warm up lap before. Unfortunately I folllowed a BMZ too closely in the second session and when he went off the road I drove through all the rocks and gravel he threw up, destroying the intercooler, oil coolers and windscreen.

The whole cooling setup is now under review as I had an idea for a flat mounted intercooler I have always wanted to try.

Yesssss... Nice work with the setup..

Sucks about the small excursion and damage, but a flat mount would be interesting.

I recently had a ride in a military hummer and noticed it had a horizontal radiator.

Are you thinking V mount?

I don't have a clue what any of that means, but blow me that manifold looks awesome.

And that sucks. But if you learnt to give a gap to knobs in fake Toyotas on the track, I guess some benefit came of it.

After destroying the coolers and windscreen, I decided to completely change the layout of the cooling systems. It is an idea I had been playing with for a while, but the damage forced my hand. Replace like for like, or switch to the new setup.

I dont like wasting time, money and effort to stay the same.

The next few posts will catch you up on the last two months developments.

The pics below show how I developed my idea. First I purchased a nose cut from a local guy. I then welded up a frame to mount it to my engine stand. From there I started cutting metal out to fit the intercooler laying flat in front of the radiator. I then fabricated a sheetmetal duct similar to the OEM one for the radiator. This forms the back of the intercooler duct.

The last pic shows the 'chimney' which is the intercooler outlet. This will go through the bonnet.

Once I had all the shapes correct on the nose cut, it was time to make them in composites. I decided to try out carbon/Kevlar weave as the cloth was going cheap. It is a pain in the arse to cut though...

Next I had to make the existing front bar work with the new cooler layout. This required some cutting...

I have a new simpler front bar design planned, however as I wanted to get the car out on the track to test the new cooler layout, I need to improvise. The bonnet needs some remedial work to make the chimney more aerodynamic and add some stiffness back into the front, however early indications are it is all going to work.

New intercooler layout meant new intercooler piping. Again, since time was short, I made it up from off the shelf items from Autobarn. $200 in bends, silicone joiners, and reducers later, I had a completely new intercooling route. Hot side goes from the 2 inch turbo outlet to 2.5 inch pipe, to 3 inch end tank. The cold side is entirely 3 inch to the 2.75 inch throttle body.

Upload

The intercooler piping now sits in the space the pressurised header tank and overflow bottle wanted to sit. Seeing as two things cannot share the same space, I relocated the headertank and overflow to behind the strut tower.
Upload

The front bar ramp needed to be widened and raised to meet up with the new radiator ducting. This was done with polyurethane foam and carbon/epoxy. The end result looks almost as as the rest of the front bar (Grandpas axe of a thing)

I have always believed in air boxes over exposed 'hot air induction pods' so using sheetmetal and my favourite tape I formed a shape around the intercooler hot pipe, air intake pipe and other bits and pieces.

Upload

Of course, this could not remain sheetmetal in my car, so a wet layup of carbon followed.

The finished piece is not pretty, but is air
tight - ish.

It looks much better with a carbon fibre lid. The lid is made from a sheet of carbon laid up on a piece of glass.

No point having an airbox without a cold air intake.

Using sheetmetal and my favourite tape I made a shape that would funnel air from the existing hole in the bumper up to the front of the airbox, once again having to work around those pesky intercooler pipes.

Again, the finished product is never going to win me any show car prizes, but it definitely controls the air and sends it where I want it to go.

Interestingly, when the car is stationary and you give the throttle a blast, you can see the lid f the airbox suck in. Not bad considering the lid is 'sealed' with velcro.
